#MUSICMONDAY: TALK ON CORNERS - The Theory of Relevance

Hello Reader Friends,

Please do excuse, and forgive my hiatus just before the close of what is probably my favourite theme week to date. A period of ill-health landed me a guest of the NHS - my oh so gracious hosts...

Before that however, I had two extremely important pieces that I just had to close out with, and this is one of them. Tackling a sticky subject, I wanted to write a feature from an angle that is not often seen. I wanted to take an in-depth look at a negative factor in the career of one the entertainment world's most charming artists. I was engrossed in what I learned, and I hope that you are too. Let's discuss the 'Theory of Mariah Carey's Relevancy, as a Credible Artist in Today's Music Climate'.

Please share your thoughts on the topic discussed in the Comment Box, but be aware that abusive, or inappropriate messages will be removed.

When Mariah Carey first released the album E=MC2, the media had a field day with The Elusive Chanteuse's audacity in referencing Einstein's genius, with her fluffy pop nonsense.

Mariah Carey representation by RockY14
Relativity has never been Mariah's strong points when it comes to the critics out for her blood, or better still, her graceful retirement. What those lovely bunches describe as a long overdue career move on her part, she views as a concept that will never apply to her, because received well or not, she will always make music. And isn't it just as well she sticks to her guns (or stilettos in her case)? Had she listened, we would have no Emancipation, no Precious, no Me.I Am…and a lot more. In conversation with a professional photographer recently, on mentioning the conditions whenever she tries to enter, or leave a building, his immediate response was "…although I don't know why, she hasn't done anything of relevance in years…" Typically, his standarduniformed response did initially irritate me; but I chose instead to educate him on why you shouldn't ingest ALL of the regurgitated bile that the media spews at you – you have a choice – ALWAYS SPITNEVER SWALLOW!

Still, his well-replayed question has always baffled me, because here is a woman who, for the past 25 years, has dominated the popularity stakes with, or without the addition of the charts. I'm aware of the confusion reflected on many screens at this moment in time, but stay with me here…

Mariah Carey is notorious for being a buxom airhead, with ridiculous Diva antics that she sometimes takes too far (good cause or not, you cannot allow your team to schedule a children’s foundation gala, at the same time that you are supposed to be opening a live television showcelebrating you as their guest of honour).

Fully aware of her public personaCarey mocks herself mercilessly for the amusement of her fans; the press however, use these opportunities to paint her as someone endlessly superficial, and self-indulgent. Were she the simpleton that most media project her to be, then she would have been the giggly teenager that signed over her publishing rights for the track 'All In Your Mind' for $5000, in early 1990. Instead, the level-headed young woman turned the offer down, and kept the highest stake of her nine-times platinum-sellingeponymous album, which contributed to her current half-billionairess status. But that's beside the point.

Her single most, self-sufficient decisioninfluenced a new generation of supposedly more appealing wave of females wearing less than the suits they were born with (I REFUSE to call these mostly entertaining, exotic dancers 'Divas', when all they have is a sense of entitlement that they have yet to earnBeyoncé will be the first, and probably only, to graduate into 'The Club' – IF she's lucky). They learned to play the game from watching her. What other invaluable knowledge did she impart? Well quite simply, the 'Art' (if there is any), in their craft - every element from singing style, to musical partnerships, to inclusion in boardroom decisions, and market diversity. How Mariah Carey has stayed relevant through the times of change is simple – by leading the pack. No, I'm not still high from hospital pharmaceuticals - pay attention; I have some overwhelming evidence to lay on you

We all know how she changed the course of music; not by fusing Pop, and RnB from as early as her first album in 1990 (if you've listened then you've learned) – all she did was prove she's had an RnB element from the very startMariah changed music history by opening the door for Hip Hop to be played alongside Pop, and Rock, on mainstream radio, by fusing it with RnB in 1996. Since Janet owns Queen of PopMary owns Queen of Hip Hop & RnB, and Ms Aretha will forever be the Queen of SoulI reckon this single act, earns Mariah the Queen of Fusion as a title – doncha think? That’s not all though…When it comes to how Mariah has used Music to stay a step ahead, there are more avenues than you can count. Consider Market Diversity for instance, where it's safe to say, that Mariah set some trendsRecording in Spanish gave Mariah a way in which to honour her Latina heritage through her gift - an opportunity that she has come to relish. With that trademark under her wing, and so many others to choose from, that for a time, she recorded other foreign-language versions of her singles. Hey – she even taught uber Supermodel Gisele Bundchen the English language through her music, so clearly choosing to leave that idea aside for awhile, was no bad decision.

Whilst they are all the rage now, at the time of Mariah's 1994, 'Merry Christmasalbum, there was a hole in the market, that Mr Tommy Mottola picked up on, and set about to fill. You see there were a host of Christmas albums in the charts, but none were by youngcontemporary artiststopping the charts o’ the day. With that one decisioncame a hit that in 2013, after almost 20 years of repeat buyers every December, became the first multi-platinum Christmas single, and by suit, the most successful Christmas single of all time. Relevant? Methinx so. Add to that, Mariah early on, cornered another market that none of her contemporaries thought to brave; alongside the Queen of Fusion, you could safely say that she is the undisputed Queen of The Remix (insert wispy vocal run here). With re-sung vocals for every track, this lady just doesn't play around!

Many question Mariah's relevance on the base of Billboard's Top 200 charts. What they forget however, is that Nielsen's Soundscan counts the several other charts where you will find Mariah reigning supremeDance remixes, for example, are her personal pot of gold. Take last year's summer hit #Beautiful

At this point, I would like to take the opportunity to personally lead a chorus of laughter at every hack in the world, who does not know what the hashtag stands for, so proceeds to belittle it in tantrum! It's not her fault if you're not 'down with the kids' when her 44-year-old self, is! She has the fans of the RnB/Hip Hop chart to thank, for her latest #1 album – the current 'Me.I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse'. Yes, you are correct in thinking that it has dropped out of the current Top 100 chart, but as is so often said – numbers don't lie. Unfortunately, it's true of age as well. Aside from Countries like Japan, where one of her biggest fanbases resideMariah's once hardcorereliablebuying market are all placing mortgages and car finance higher than chart releases. That's now the job of teenyboppers and tweens, who sadly value boybands and female nudity with backing tracks, over intellectual lyricsmusical excellence and, y’know, talent.

Her music has raised millions for charity, often the result of many a donated single ('Hero – Help for Heroes'2008, '9/11 Survivors'2001), personal supportseveral alliances, and philanthropic endeavours (American Foundation for AIDS ResearchClothes Off Our BacksFresh Air FundOperation SmileLive 8Stand Up To Cancer, and manymany more). Love it or hate it - we already know that her influence is responsible for the singing styles of a new legion, and before there were Barbz, the Beyhive, or the 'Armies' to support them, a worldwide group of Lambs had come together in worship and patronage of The One and Only.

Only the Mariahs of this world can bring back Liz Taylor’s corner in the scent market, using her song titles as perfume monikers – let me guess, you thought Beyoncé did that?! No, no dear readers - not the case. It was Ms Carey, and her aforementioned lambs, that boosted her now 12-strong line of best-sellers. Please believe Elizabeth Arden aren't ones for throwing good money after bad – her scents bring in their high cents; hence why they keep adding to the collection! Staying on the commercial market side of the street, Mariah has always been very selective about whom she allows to use her name in their brand's promotion. Yes, that cheque does need to be of the larger variety, but the sheer fact that she can command these figures – yes, we will discuss the perks of that $18 million dollar American Idol jackpot later – proves that she is a very viable, and respected name across multiple industries – think the Inaugural Venus legs of a Goddess. She is most definitely likely to put her name to projects that will allow her to connect with the younger generation. Her latest Butterfly drink with a QR Code that lets you access special Mariah-related content and information, may be the first drink of its kind, but she didn't start there. Once Upon A Time, a Pepsi allegiance saw her creating signature ringtones in a variety of personalitiesperformed by Carey who, at the time, claimed something along the lines of there being a choice for almost every type of call one was ever likely to receive.

Kicking things up a notch is nothing new to Mariah Carey. With the release of her twelfth studio album, 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel', came another interactive offering, this time, in the form of a miniature inlay magazineglossy enough to give Vogue and Cosmo a run for their money. Complete with interviewsfavourite selectionsfashion choices, and everything else that a person could possibly want to know about the world's best-selling Diva, the deluxe album gift was a great welcome to new fans and old. Now we've already covered most of Mariah's big and small-screen undertakings; but did you also know that there was another, lesser-known outlet, where she also shone loud and clear to an outdoor venue full of concert goers, in five different cities? In November 2011 (pre-Tupac at Coachella), Mariah became the first artist to do so, with the help of T-Mobile, and Musion Holographic 3D Technology, for their 'Life is for SharingcampaignIrrelevant you say? HA! (My) Bragging asideMariah's goal has always been to interact with her fans. That's why long before the days of Social Media, she would use her website to leave personally recorded voicemails to her fans.

purposely left the last area for proof of Mariah's relevance in Music, and as a viablesales investment for the last topic that we touch on, because it is the touchiest of topics where Ms. MC is concerned; that time is now upon us so...let's talk Fashion

Most are sceptical at the suggestion of Mariah Carey as a Trend Leader, but there are certain areas where, sceptical or not, the proof comes down to visual evidence. For instance, I'm sure that we all remember 1999's Heartbreaker video – the most expensive video ever made up to that point in time. Well it is now (concrete) lore of old, that right before filmingMariah's wardrobe manager still hadn't found anything 'special' to do with her jeans, that would define the fashion of her new album era. On hearing of the conundrumMariah came to her own rescue, by hacking off the waistbandfurther fraying the edges for effect. By the following fashion season, her split-secondquick-thinking amendment was reflected on catwalks, with no recognition whatsoever of who inspired them. Another trend that I'm certain will take off in some effect soon, is her new 1-hand update from Olivia Pope's short-glove trend; which I can personally attest to having seen in the AW14 trend forecastsShonda has a lot of Scandal loving Gladiators out there. Mariah has singlehandedly (pun intended) managed to reconnect the style, to create the powerful bond a strong woman, with musical genius (because y'know there was that one guy, who had a thing about a white, singlesequinned glove).

After Imelda Marcos, the next generation's shoe Queen is undoubtedly Mrs Cannon. With more pairs than even she can count, and a boutique-style wardrobe just for them, Mariah leads her contemporaries, and the NewGen, with lessons in the design houses to frequent. She is so well loved amongst designers, that the likes of Roberto Cavalli send her creations just because a new design makes him think of her! Can SOMEONE please tell me where to meet this man, so that he'll just think of me, a couple of times a year?!

As Mariah said at the OUT 100 Awards last November, her "boobs have been out for years". It's a statement that no-one could deny, even if they wanted to; alongside the suggestion that maybe they could go INside and play sometimes. The trend-setting Mariah Carey is fearlessanswers to absolutely no-one, and makes it possible for others to do the same as often as possible, through her apparel and accessories line, the first of which – 'Honey B. Fly' - debuted in 1998, before any other artist thought to create clothing and accessory lines. Available through her website initially, the first brand spawned 'Automatic Princess' in 2004in collaboration with Claire's Accessories – their first sold out collection, before mysteriously being discontinued in the same year.

Beyond all of the evidence of Mariah's marketable relevance above, if you buy none of those numbers, then consider thisMariah Carey has pull with everyone from the President of Def Jam, to that other one who runs the Country. Guess that $84 million Virgin payoff didn't do too much damagenow did it? Mariah ISwithout a doubt, an A-List heavyweight. Were she not, the world's leading designers would not be tripping over themselves to provide attire for everything from scheduled appearances, to premières, to that little American Idol gig that everyone keeps disparaging. Her influence runs so far, that she has had to dispense with the blinged out microphone and stand that she made little too much of a trend. All has worked out for the best though; the new gold stage microphone fits perfectly with the 'chanteusepersona, so you could consider her fad donated to charity.

With a perfectly manicured toe in every pie, Mariah Carey's theory of relevance is to BE the ingredients for every filling, making sure every slice she offers is filled to the brim with her flavour.

#LIM SPECIAL: Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (#MariahWeek Review)

One of the many things to love about this lady is that as much as she likes to write loosely, to leave meaning open to interpretation, if you really analyse her lyrics, you will find some of the wittiest, most intelligent phrasing. If you don't pay attention, you'll miss the punchline. This is why it always makes me so sad to hear her referred to as airheaded; because her intelligence way surpasses that of many revered in the public eye today (and several of those writing about her - if you think that her extensive vocab became a gimmick for this album, then clearly, you've never listened to any of her previous ones)! All of that aside, let's talk what the world called a Turkey, shall we? Because I do not think that you can fully appreciate, or even understand Me. I Am…, without looking back at its predecessor.

Betcha Gon Know (The Prologue)

A gamechanger in many ways, Betcha marked a complete about face from a 12-album career formula that had so far proven successful. Mariah opened with a dark ballad. She was angry, she was vengeful, she was broken; but above all, she was exceedingly calm, which turned our light, happy-go-lucky Honey into a borderline scary, scorned woman. Previously, these types of lyrics were masked with an up-tempo, less threatening beat. One that matched the lyrics made this Mariah unnerving in a less Chica, more Chucky, kind of way. I personally read several reviews shunning it, because critics simply couldn't expand their minds to accept this Mariah Carey – without their perceived bouncy fluff, they simply did not know what to do with her! The first time we have a connected storyline almost from start to finish; this song acts as the equivalent of a scene-setting, curtains up.

Obsessed

This album's only misstep, quite possibly contributed to its overall reception. Despite her protestations to the contrary (which also harmed the album's credibility, in my humble opinion), it's quite obviously aimed at a desperate, pill-popping, confused entity of a person, who at the time, switched from over a decade of taking pointless shots at a woman, to a newfound obsession with a newly-married, non-ex. Though the track is a great one ('I'm the press conference, you're a conversation' – C'monnn!), almost on par with Clown (Charmbracelet, 2002), and right on the money in fact; it has absolutely no place on this album, unless it were to come much later in the story. Since it did not, Obsessed should have been a standalone single, as trying to strengthen the innocent claims, by burying it in an album, really did not bear either case any weight.

H.A.T.E.U. (Having A Typically Emotional Upset)

Back to the story however, and this is the balladic morning aftermath, of the explosive night before. An anagram, more than an emotional threat, it's the Mariah Carey equivalent to an 80s Cyndi Lauper track, only with crazy high, heartbreak notes salving the soul. The rose-tinted spectacles have been shattered, she sees the cheating chump in the cold light of day, and all of the overwhelming emotions start flooding in, as the shock begins to wear off. Although she no longer wants him, that shock has not stopped the love that had previously taken deep root. Reality seeps in as the smoke clears, and she is left to survey the messy ruins. A great closing line acts almost as an invitation to an excellent So So Def remix by Jermaine 'JD' Dupri. Featuring OJ 'Da' Juiceman, Big Boi, and Gucci Mane – even though the latter is as superfluous to the track, as he is to music in general. The last line of the album version acts as the hook for the remix, and thus binds the two together neatly.

Candy Bling

The nostalgic throwback to a childhood romance that seemed like everything, in the days before real heartbreak came her way. It's sweet, reminiscent, and one of those 'do you remember when' songs that everybody can relate to. What I initially thought to be a stupid song title inviting ridicule actually makes perfect sense a few lines in, and the floaty production even offers wistful transport back to those sunny days of puppy love

Ribbon

With the exception of a very annoying backing by Terius Nash (aka The-Dream), this is one of the album favourites. What is clearly the first of a few love songs dedicated to her then-new husband, actually works as a steamy part of the storyline, as the throwback to when everything was hot, with a capital H.O.T. The return to adulthood talks of their heyday as a couple, when the couple were at their seemingly unbreakable best, and moments apart felt like hours, instead of 20 good minutes.

Inseparable

Moving into the next phase of the breakup, she’s missing him, struggling to cut him out of her life. Trying to figure out that elusive 'where did we go wrong' moment, she is on that wavering verge of forgetting what he did wrong, as her vulnerability takes control. Sounding like beautiful, straight 90s RnB, Inseparable hearkens back to everything that music had been missing up to that 2009-point.

The Angry Phase is upon us. Finding her inner strength momentarily, she remembers his crimes with self-deprecating clarity. Now that she does, she lauds her former beau for his acting abilities on their stage of a relationship. From the 'I'm a fool for giving him everything' school of thought, she attacks herself, and him in equal measure, before exiting stage left.

It's A Wrap

Is her first attempt at closing the door for good. It's not just an epic moment in the story, but also in Carey's abilities as a songwriter, and level of song composition. It’s a highlight in her own personal story as an artist. Comedic sass, stellar vocal arrangement and production. Carey finds her musical home, and evolves into that Chanteuse we are later introduced to. This is the real Mariah that any supporter knows and loves. It is the class of the music, met by her larger than life personality in this Jazz lounge epic, that is just screaming to be delivered from Marilyn’s piano.

In terms of the story at hand however, it is the moment when she regains her power and control of the situation. The lyrics have you wondering if in the earlier vulnerable moment of Inseparable, she did, in fact, take him back for a split second, only for him to mess up in an even shorter amount of time; because by this point, she's officially done – there's no coming back. Out all night, and ignoring her calls, the comedy takes the form of the drunken meltdown of a 40s screen siren, in kitten heels, satin and pre-Technicolor monochrome. Sarcastic insults flow freely, as do the (understandable) threats of violence, and warnings of worsening humiliation – by the time anyone's reduced to mentioning Maury Povich, it's safe to say that whatever you had is gone, it's gone, it's gone, it's gone

Up Out My Face

Is where the tempo picks up, and so do the comedic insults. She finally cuts those ties, as she comes good on her promise in Betcha, that he will feel her pain, if it is the last thing that she ever does. The marching band reprise is just genius (I do love a good marching band, me), as it not only adds stature and attitude to the  track, but is also a nod to her dashing hunk of a prince, riding in on his white horse(powered Bugatti), to save the dayDrumline, anyone?!

More Than Just Friends

By now, we've met the replacement, and the connection is intense. The wordplay is like a fraught, Wimbledon Final, setting the scene for the next man on it. Mariah aces some great one-liners, just for the heck of it, and you get a peek into just how easy this songwriting thing can sometimes be for her. However, she is begging you to read between the lines again – the quiet intro and hook asks, "Am I okay?" In quiet need for affirmation beneath all of the bravado

The Impossible

After the shocking heartache at the start, it is no surprise that Mariah would have closed off her heart. So when this new person opens it back up, and teaches her that it IS ok to love again, it's no wonder that she considers it The Impossible. Another written for her new husband, the chorus lyrics say everything that needs to be said: 'You did the impossible, you rescued my love…I had almost given up'. With Jodeci's 'Forever My Lady' sample running as a pulsating undercurrent, it's no surprise that the song is breathy, and sexual; so when it gets a reprise that takes things one step further, Mariah officially raises the temperature, until you want to engage in partnered activities – will somebody kindly pass me some ice and a fan

Angel (The Prelude) / Angels Cry

The mood turns sombre as we move into the Angel Prelude. Thankfully unlike real-life, things have not worked out with Mr Rebound, and she is facing the agony of wanting her true love back, even though she’s still on the ground from his last blow. Devoid of every remaining scrap of self-protection, she lays her heart on the line one last time, and offers to put the work in to salvage what’s left of their relationship, before the heartbreaking final acceptance that their relationship cannot be saved.

Languishing (The Interlude)

A beautiful interlude that could absolutely have survived as a full track. Its sadness talks of judgement, desperation, and a lack of consideration and compassion for the pain in our fellow human beings. The sadness behind the rhetorical questions takes us into the massive powerhouse finale.

I Want To Know What Love Is

Mariah’s Foreigner cover fits perfectly into the story, and is a fitting close, as she begins to accept that the real love in her relationship came from her alone. In an ideal world, her cheating ex would never let he go (likely wouldn't have cheated in the first place, to be fair); but in the real world, even though she accepts that they are done, she is lamenting over what could have been, if it were a two-way street, and realising that she never had that at all. In belting acceptance, it’s the moment of closure.

Now. If you go back and listen to this album again with a new ear, you might just discover that not only is this pattern a precursor to Me. I Am…, but you might also now discover, why Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is quite possibly one of Mariah Carey’s best albums yet.

Until the next...

#FILMFRIDAY: CloseUP - BETCHA DIDN'T KNOW THAT...Whether Movies, TV, or Soundtracks, Mariah's Got Game!

Most people are unaware, that Mariah Carey’s film and TV credits go far further than Glitter and Precious. Did you know? I thought not! Well for this #FilmFriday Special, we're going to take a look at just a few of them...

Mariah actually has a host of roles on her CV that are never mentioned, because there is little bad to be said about them, especially where Mariah’s involvement is concerned.

In Tennessee (2008), she plays Krystal, a battered wife, desperate to escape her cop husband Frank (Lance Reddick), who knows that her talent could take her away from him, which it eventually does. When she runs, she meets a pair of brothers, Carter and Ellis (Ethan Peck and Adam Rothenberg) in search of their childhood home and father. One terminally ill without the key to life that only their estranged parent holds; the journey isn't as easy it sounds. Frank calls in the help of his cop friends, who keep him apprised of Krystal’s every move. Actually, Krystal’s journey steers what is essentially a too dark and too long road trip movie back in to the right lane. Not one that you can watch twice (ok maybe that’s just me), it’s great to watch Krystal’s plight land her on a stage, performing with her idol, Willie Nelson.

In WiseGirls (2002), she plays Raychel; a tough-talking, sassy waitress that unwittingly becomes involved in a mob sting, thanks to her friendship with undercover agents Meg (Mira Sorvino), and Kate (Melora Waters). She is funny, relatable, and surprisingly identifiable in the everyday, unglamorous role, stripped of her usual finery.

I suggest you check it out!

Then there is that other forgotten gemMariah’s turn as Candy Cushnip on Ally McBeal. A loopy little Single Sally; she is called as a key witness by John Cage (Peter MacNichol), in his case against a matchmaker who claimed that she could match anyone up. Crazy quirks and uncontrollable OCD landed her firmly in the undatable client pool. As some might know, when it comes to Mariah’s real life public appearances, she does actually take her own lighting specialist (hey, a Diva is, as a Diva does...); well in this role (which is where I believe she got the idea), another everyday character (a librarian, or some such regular person), hired a lighting specialist to follow her around everywhere, in particular, on her dates!

Shown in roughly 2002, the stint was a great turn on the small screen, after Glitter the previous year (and some obvious acting lessons).

As far as Soundtracks go, did you know that her Prince of Egypt duet with Whitney Houston brought the Song's writers home an Oscar? She's also done other Soundtrack work too; most recently, 'Almost Home', the theme song for last year's blockbuster Oz: The Great and Powerful:

And that, my friends, is what you call one seriously multi-talented Diva!

Until the next...

#WearItWednesday: OnTrend - How to Wear The Classic White Shirt - Examples from Angie to Mariah (of course)!

Reading a recent InStyle article on 'Ways to Wear The Classic White Shirt', I was reminded of WGSN Head of Retail Lorna Hall's Macro Trends seminar at Pure London in February where she talked of the exact same subject. If it's good enough for Lorna, then I want to investigate!

The suggestions offered by the piece were all interesting enough:

GIRLS star Allison Williams has her own look working overtime in this double - Game, Set, and Match, I'd say; wouldn't you?

Deconstruct a Tuxedo

We all saw this one emblazoned across the fashion pages, whether we believed it deserved the attention or not. Angelina Jolie provides our second example...

Layer Under A Bustier

Now, although the advice is to stick to black to make this pairing work, as long as it's a block colour and silhouette-friendly look, I'd say go for your choice. I've been known to work this look with red, purple, and blue - all of which were pulled off successfully (maybe within an inch of their lives, but that still counts as a win in my book)! Julia Roberts demonstrates under a gorgeous bustier gown here (with a frock like that, it makes you wonder why on Earth she bothered, but thankfully, it worked).

The ESP way

My personal suggestion? There used to be a television advert, Once Upon A Time; where the lead female couldn't find a thing to wear in her wardrobe, until in the end, she threw on a white shirt, paired it with a brown belt, and some brown cowboy-like boot-heels. She looked chic, stylish, and above all sexy as I don't know what, in such a simple purpose switch of the garment. From that day, I started wearing shirts as dresses, skirts as mini-dresses and never looked back - if she could switch it up, so could I, gosh darn it!

All About Mariah

And of course, when it comes to an unrecognised Fashion Icon...How do you do The White Shirt - The Mariah Way? Well quite simply really, the look hasn't changed much in 6 years:
