#ESPspotlight REVIEW: #PURE34 LONDON (DAY TWO), KENSINGTON OLYMPIA, 05 AUGUST

Festive activities were well underway by the time I touched down on Kensington ground, for #Pure34 London - Day Two. Greeted by the same lovely welcoming committee as the day before; I was hardpressed to think of what more this jampacked event could offer me, after the flashing lights of 24 hours prior - but I was soon about to learn.

Philip Frau, Co-founder of Frau Blau Clothing
Planning to devote my day to the seminar programme, slotting zone exploration and the Footwear & Accessories catwalk around the advertised talks; I hit the ground running, finding Frau Blau's stand too great a distraction to ignore. Full of sexy bodycon dresses and separates with unique panelling, engineered to emulate the female shape in it's most flattering form, I was as drawn to the collection, as the Israeli co-founder; who was as flamboyant as the designs on his clothing rack. Philip Frau talked me through the mechanics of his creations and more importantly - his focus on using layered aesthetics to encourage slimming, but realistic lines, that hoodwink the eye, and encourage his female clientele to feel, and look their best from every angle.

I unwillingly broke away from my entertaining host, just in time to snag a good spot at the Grand Hall stage for the WGSN SS14 Trend Seminar, delivered by Head of Retail & Strategy, Lorna Hall. Arguably my most educational moment of the year to date; Hall taught her audience how to breakdown what we were seeing on the catwalks, by explaining precisely how macro-trend forecasts translate to the ensembles that stylists are already putting together.

WGSN's Lorna Hall delivered arguably the #1 seminar of the entire event
Her advice on  the 'Retro Tropicana' trends for instance, was to expect fruit and floral, tropical foliage, and botanical leaves to make a surprisingly welcome return in oversized placement prints, along with beach graphics. The unusually long, cold winter of 2013, prompted designers to look at light knitwear for 'Pre-Summer 2014'; opening up canvasses of lush, bright, colourful yarns, and Summer marl ombres in unconstructed silhouettes. The crash course proved invaluable, enabling me to take in the Womenswear catwalk that followed with a completely new, analytical eye. The fact that Ms Hall was able to pack so many points to note into the short, 45-minute session were a factor to marvel at, in and of itself.

On an enlightened high after trying out my new knowledge 'in the field'; I was only too ready for more guidance by the start of the next seminar. 'Untold Possibilities: Unleashing  the Potential of Online Marketing', was led by Google's New Business Development Officer, Kamil Tavas. After an awkward bumpy start with a failed live demonstration of G+ photo backups, and a sketchy Hangout demonstration with a colleague at her desk in our favourite search engine's HQ; we got down to more reliable content - case study examples from some of the most successful brand marketing techniques in recent times, and the roles that Google's newest features played, in bringing the intended goals  to fruition. The logistics of Ann Summers' paid search campaign by iCrossing proved meaty food for thought; whilst the Burberry Kisses campaign demonstrated the successful introduction of, and innovation behind, themed apps - both of which led cleanly into Mobile rich media content, designed to interact with your audience, and enhance your brand experience for followers on the move.

Zara Rhodes' SS14 collection debut
A short, leg-stretching interval later, it was time to pull up a pew for Zandra Rhodes' new collection debut. Interviewed live for the audience by the Daily Mail's Fashion Editor, Laura Cox; Rhodes spoke of finding inspiration in sketchbook doodles that she affectionately described as "wiggles", as well as coordinating patterns. When asked what inspired those 'wiggles'; Rhodes explained that the creative sparks could come from any interesting burst of activity that caught her eye; even citing the clouds through an airplane window as the influential example for her 'Cloud' dress; and a beach sketch as the whim behind a beautiful orange number that went unnamed. Although her latest pieces formed part of an entire collection, the veteran designer was also keen for each to "stand strong as individuals".

Fresh from the Chinese manufacturers, her new shoe samples arrived in the UK that morning, with mocks having only been made in a size 3 so far. As the beauties modelling her collection were firmly within the Country's size average, they had no alternative but to resort to hand-modelling the heels, barefoot on the runway - an alternative that would have been completely unorthodox in any other designer's debut, yet somehow came across as so normal that it was mundane, in the world of the ageless, funky designer.

Far too soon, the entertaining showcase was over, and I hop-skip-skidaddled over to the National Hall Stage, for the 'Retail in the Digital Age: Interacting with Customers through Social Media and Digital PR' roundtable. Chaired by Kate Guerney of etailPR, Kate Payne, co-founder of retail boutique Hengelo; Stylist and TV Presenter, Sonya Lennon, and Rebecca Rae, of the Creative Photolink Group, were her chatting companions, bringing the air of a Sex & The City 'luncheon with the girls' to the 30-minute panel.

(l-r): Rebecca Rae, Kate Guerney, Kate Payne, and Sonya Lennon
Giving solid, tried and tested advice to aspiring fashion bloggers, and brands without a PR budget, looking to market in-house; the ladies covered the importance of planning your company's social reach through quarterly campaign plans, strategic content, and keyword targets. Audience questions led to discussions on the frequency of social posts, and the nature of product stories - the overall consensus being that topics should be interesting to the reader, but relevant to stock. The most effective social medium for fashion-based brands was also in question, with a special focus on the growing foothold of Pinterest, the growing importance of video content, with figures proving the visual aids to be 300x more effective for sales than print media; and wouldn't you know it, rounding out the discussion with the smartest ways to include blogs in your outreach plan - including the selection of events and topics that lead back to your brands and stock. I really must give all that a try...

Back to the seminar however, and it was uncanny to see how much the experiences of the panelists and audience members who shared their backstories aligned. When it came to building social media platforms, all were in equal agreement that social media offered an expressive freedom that a standard company website cannot entertain, when trying to establish, and maintain a core company message. Performance measurement is also much easier to judge, through audience interaction, and reactive sales. An interesting twist on the discussion; negative feedback and how to respond to instances of it, incited an enthusiastic response. The ladies agreed that negative comments should never be deleted; in fact, comments should be addressed - and quickly - so that your potential clientele have a front row seat to watch you handle adversity, and potentially win their favour. Conversely, should the negative feedback be antagonistic, the incidents should be glaring beacons that you should avoid at all costs. In closing, our relatable panel collectively bemoaned the drain on time, and resources required to maintain a successful social media relationship (Amen to that, from this choir). They also reminded us that whilst social media is fast becoming the most welcome way to communicate with our buying audience, online sales to date only account for 15% of overall retail purchase - so don't get caught up in the shiny, new stuff, and shun the ways of the old school.

The very useful talk was an excellent segue into the next. What I was able to catch of 'Visually Create Your Brand: Telling Your Story through Today's Key Social Networks', with Paul Sheehy of Folk Digital, seemed to be a somewhat interesting introduction into the biggest social media tools for professional use. Tucked away in a maze that I failed miserably to master throughout the event's duration - after far too short a programme break to get one's bearings, never mind traverse between stages - by the time I found the elusive Footwear & Accessories Stage, the most important part of the session appeared to have passed, if the lacklustre attendees were anything to go by. A crash course in Pinerest served as a useful introduction to the three year-old site, that officially surpassed Twitter and Facebook for recorded referral traffic, in less than half that time. After sharing insider secrets on how to become an 'Uberpinner'; Sheehy touched on many a Kate Spade example whilst championing Tumblr for short storytelling.

DSUK London SS14
Attempting to navigate my way out of the Gallery maze and get a look at a mere few of the seemingly endless stands on the upper level; I ran into two friendly representatives from Ruby K Designs, who talked me through their reversible, 5-in-1 pure silk scarf, that included a sarong and sari amongst their versatile fashion options. DSUK London then visually accosted my eyes, doping me up on a handbag high, before I had any say in the matter, whatsoever. The variety in their selection even had me hankering after utterly impractical pieces, by shamelessly taunting me with their attractive wares.

By the time I tore myself away and found the first of Zandra Rhodes' two stands, the lady herself had long finished off her champagne reception; where she reportedly sat and chatted with visitors, after personally awarding some generous competition giveaways, leaving me with no other option but to indulge in the shoe collection presented earlier, up close, until my little heart was content. Unfortunately, even that was short-lived; as security announced the close of the venue for another day.

As always, catch the event album in full on the ESP Facebook Page; where you are free to indulge, like, and share the contents until your cups runneth over. Once you've done that, don't forget to come back and Stay Tuned for the third and final instalment in the +PureLondonOfficial series!

Until the morrows...

#ESPspotlight REVIEW: #PURE34 LONDON (DAY ONE), KENSINGTON OLYMPIA, 04 AUGUST

Full of glitz and glamour, the first of the three-day event sparkled with promise from the moment you entered the Kensington exhibition venue. Stylish guides in identical coral tunic dresses from The Pretty Dress Company, topped with wispy chignons, and a signature, cascading right tendril, warmly greeted each and every visitor, while simultaneously keeping discreet, watchful eyes on badge security.

Once the complimentary giftbags with the all-important show information had been dispensed, the frosted glass doors opened and - like Alice through the looking glass, straight into a fashionista's delight - you were transported.

My practice-run for London Fashion Week Spring / Summer 2014; someone probably should've forewarned the Stage Managers of the Womenswear, Spirit, Footwear & Accessories catwalks, of a resident stalker at each show...but since no-one did, I revisited each until my little heart was content, even momentarily setting time aside, amidst chin on the floor fashion lust, to learn some things - but alas I'm skipping ahead...

Prior to my first stage indulgence of the day, Rino & Pelle were my starting block, for suede and leather jackets of various rich shades and colourwashes that stopped you in your tracks. A mint green suede number seduced me initially, beginning a litany of surprises throughout the day. Adamant that every label exhibiting would display buying prices on par with the wealthy borough's local house prices; I was beyond shocked to find what appeared to be €48.50 on the tag, and naturally assumed either the figures meant something different in the apparently Italian language, or the conversion rates must have gone up again...

Deciding this truly was a Wonderland; I continued to marvel at the offerings from exhibitors like the deceptively named FEVER, the comfy, beach-ready Komodo, and the traffic-stopping Silvian Heach, whose variety of all-weather fashion, footwear and accessories would make a sexy little swan out of the skinniest ugly duckling.

Pondering how some of the patterns, simple fabrics and lines would work flatteringly on the 'larger' sizes, that the brand's rep promised me their global stores carry; I went in search of the National Hall stage to find myself a cushy viewing spot ahead of the Spirit catwalk, scheduled to begin shortly. My first indication of how truly grand the scale of this event was, I had no clue at this point, that the event took over both of the entire National and Grand Halls in the seemingly endless space. Imagine my shock when I realised that the number of vendors and 'zones', required the (almost) equally large Gallery floor space above as well! Again I digress...For the moment, I parked up comfortably in front of the stage where the teen and young adult fashion trends of SS14 were about to be premièred, with surprisingly little obstruction, considering the number of fellow press in attendance.

A beautifully bright and sunny Sunday afternoon; the placement was perfect for the only stage with a naturally lit backdrop - the setting actually adding a youthful energy to a show jam-packed with breathtakingly beautiful designs. Kicking things off with a bang were Glamorous. The vampishly sexy label with an edge, were one of the few family-run stands that I would take a shine to by the time three days were up.

Instantly recognising some familiar faces - and signature walks - each gorgeous gal in the spotlight hit the mark with every single movement; so much so, that I literally started hearing a pretentious photographer's 'BOOM' with every pose. Giving new (better) meaning to UNK's song 'Walk It Out', a new phrase was coined in front of my very eyes - these mesmerising Hot Mamas would henceforth be known (to me), as the 'BOOM Girls'; not just for the duration of the event, but forevermore (check the facebook album below for proof with your pudding).

The Style London were up next, with an excellent variation in prints, fabrics, and materials justly befitting their name. Just when you thought you had Neon Rose pegged as a teen brand favouring prints, out comes smart, yet simple, and playful designs that would translate easily from the office to the evening with the simplest of touches.

Statement block colours were complimented with strong African tribal prints and bold colours by Mia Nisbet, Moniyang London, and CM.; with Stroppy Cat bringing a beautiful touch of vintage 70s London to stripes and polka dots. Soho Tees made willing Fashion Victims of us all; when the 'BOOM Girls' gave us a show in true 90s Gap-esque style; delivering one (hundred) classic Kodak moment(s) in under 60 seconds flat. Pastels, girly florals and aztec prints on bodycon dresses were next, from nishe, and Pussycat London.

Bariano's orange and cream collection with gold piping marked a change in style, as we moved into gorgeous eveningwear. Flowing Grecian lines juxtaposed heavy ruching with chiffon, until The Pretty Dress Company took over the catwalk with pre-Mary Quant hemlines full of 1930s to 50s film star glamour. Chi Chi were a teenage prom girl's dream, before Forever Unique closed the show in bold blues, golds and bronzes that were sexy, and seductive in the most ladylike of Fashions...
______________________________________

A short while, and several wrong turns later; the #Pure34 Pocket Guide (and Google Maps) both failed my misdirected feet. By the grace of friendly vendors, wind trajectory, and a spotlight that (arguably) resembled the North Star, I eventually found my way to the earlier-mentioned Grand Hall Stage in the nick of time for the Womenswear Catwalk.

Unlike the younger, more obvious bodies of work on the Spirit Catwalk, the more mature collections were eyecatching with an entirely different kind of allure. Split into six 'trends to watch' on the glitzier, spotlit stage, and clearly targeting the grown ups; the sophistication of 'Desert Elegance' translated into wide and flowing maxi-dresses and jumpsuits in a spectrum of beige through bold bursts of colour - both with, and without prints and large bejewelled embellishments. Think that scene in Sex & The City 2 - where the girls emerge, crescendo-high, and photoshoot-fresh from the sand dunes; atop camels all in heat-induced slo-mo - a Vogue video-centrefold brought to life. Then take out the jaded cynicism of the film, so that only the fashion remains...Now, you're cooking! Ok, let's move on....

'Post Urban Traveller' was all about textures. Stone and wood colours made oversized jackets, separates, and dresses chic in unfamiliar ways. 'Blue Nouvelle' mixed marls and tie-dyes with stripes, paisley and deeper echelons of the shade, contrasted with whites and creams. Stripes and block colours were the prevalent, sporty fad in 'Cartoon Chemicals'; with borderline neon shades making surprisingly welcome statements about the good 'ole days of the 80s, Hubba Bubba chewing gum, and your first Stabilo Highlighter 4-pack. 'Carnival' gave new meaning to 'a walk on the wild side'; with jungle prints in big, vivid shades. What should, on paper, have been too busy to the eye, stopped just short of the headache / eyesore barrier; particularly when teamed with contrasting voluminous, solid tones that kept the styles classy, and even office-wearable.

'Summer in the Shade' was the final, lingerie-laden, forecasted trend, with in-built, complimentary gym envy, courtesy of each and every 'BOOM Girl' on the strip. Black and gold went farther than Sam Sparro could ever have imagined, joining devastating forces, to leave a salivating audience in a wake littered with spending temptation...

__________________________

Dazed from my catwalk binge, I attempted to walk off my high at the mahoosive Darling exhibition stand, where every item they carried gave off the air of young English ladies at high tea - even providing the garden party backdrop. My fanciful fun was not to last however, as Javine Hylton, the only live performer at the entire event, was about to perform a brief set at the invitation of exhibitors, Ruby Rocks. It's always a good thing when an artist reminds you why you liked them in the first place. In the case of Javine, and the baggage that will automatically be associated with her to the end of her days - it was refreshing to be reminded what there was to like in the first place.

Her acoustic set compromised 'Missing You', and 'Real Things'. Call me picky, but I thought prefacing the latter with a statement like "you all know it - it was all over the radio!" Perhaps wasn't the most positive one to make. This here music fanatic was a supporter of hers, pre the murderous 'Don't Walk Away' cover (how many times and ways can I say 'LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE' before they hear me), and all that other stuff that shall go unmentioned; but I couldn't name, or even describe her first single if you paid me - it was that long ago...All that aside, she delivered a faultless performance that left us hankering for new material; sounded as amazing as she looked and, was surprisingly friendly in person...

Back to the stands, and a photobooth courtesy of Louche London caught my attention. After a festive chat with the 'Ladies who Louche'; I had just enough time to indulge in the dainty lace and chiffon on display at the Soma stand, where it felt like walking onto the set of Virginia Andrew's Flowers in the Attic movie, only in 3D - with costumes more delicate than the pages of that particular teen craze, could justly articulate...

And that, Dear Readers, is a wrap on Day One. Feel like you were there? If that doesn't do it, then the Event Albums surely will!

See the spectacular looks from the Spirit and Womenswear Catwalks, the stands mentioned above, and the rest of #Pure34, including Javine's performance, on the ESP Facebook Page - don't forget to 'tip' your writer with Likes and Shares galore!

Let your voice be heard in the Reader Stage - better known as the comment box below! In the meantime, Day Two is on the way...

Imogen Belfield is widely considered to be one of the top, up and coming jewellery talents that London has seen in recent years. Imogen Belfield’s hand crafted work represents many hours of careful thought and inspiration.

The AW12 ‘Gladiator’ collection is inspired by the Ancient Greek and Roman idea of the Olympics and Champions, with each piece in the collection named after Greek mythological characters from the Odyssey and Iliad.

#ESPNews: FASHION EAST AT LONDON FASHION WEEK SS14

Fashion East announces designer line-up for Spring/Summer 2014!

Pioneering support scheme Fashion East returns to London Fashion Week for its 27th consecutive catwalk show. Following Autumn/Winter 2013’s stellar line up of Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo, Lulu Kennedy MBE and Fashion East’s panel of industry experts have invited the trio to return to show their Spring/Summer 2014 collections. Sponsored by the brilliant Topshop for the past ten years, the Fashion East show will again take place at the Topshop venue in September.

Panel member and Vogue UK’s Fashion Editor, Francesca Burns says of the line-up:

"I am very happy to see Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo return to Fashion East this season. Each designer has so much to offer and it is very exciting to watch them develop season by season under the Fashion East umbrella. This is such an important part of London Fashion Week with an incredible legacy and I can't wait to see what's next for these guys!"

Ashley Williams AW13
Fresh out of her BA, riding the wave of her knockout graduate show, Ashley joined Fashion East for AW13. Her LFW debut paid homage to the teen adulation of pop pinups. Set to a soundtrack of 60’s sweetheart tracks, Ashley’s girl stormed the catwalk in eyepopping Elvis prints on effortlessly cool shift dresses, capri pants and flirty mohair two-pieces. A family of adorable teddy and bunny clutches completed the collection.

Sassy, pop prints like the ‘HAPPY ASHLEY’ and ‘CELEBRATE’ motifs encapsulate the light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek vibe of Ashley’s eponymous label, worn by everyone from Rihanna to BFF/Funky Offish ambassador Pixie Geldof.

'SUBSCRIBE' insists one print - and the industry is already hooked! Next big thing Ashley featured on The Times Power List 2013 and AW13 will be stocked by Colette, Joyce and WildStyle LA, among other stores.

Claire Barrow AW13
Renowned for her covetable hand-painted leather jackets and intricate illustrations, Claire’s pieces are as romantic as they are subversive. Underlined by a punk spirit, her garments are worn by musicians from Peace to Primal Scream and Rihanna.

Following SS13’s presentation and a smash hit leather jacket capsule with Joseph, Claire’s debut catwalk show bordered on the Dada-ist. Everyday objects were made-over, appearing as embroideries and scrawled doodles on signature leather and, new for AW13, lush devoré velvet, corduroy and wool. Liberated from the living room, a lampshade made a witty headpiece.

Cultivating her handwriting, Claire introduced ultrafeminine shapes: veiled biker bridal gowns, fullskirted chiffon skirts and shrugged on, oversized knit dresses in burgundy and slate. Returning for her third outing with Fashion East, her SS14 offering is hotly anticipated.

Ryan LO AW13
Self-taught knit whizz, Ryan returns to Fashion East for a third season of unabashed girliness. The Hong Kong native specialises in pink frocks to party in and texture to the max!

Ryan’s concise edit of saccharine disco dresses for SS13 captured imaginations with their effervescent combo of tinsel, tulle and marabou. AW13’s wardrobe was more all-day, all-night: twinkly knits, glitter pussy bow blouses, she-means-business skirt suits and robe coats, not forgetting his signature fluff and glitz in blush, bubblegum and baby blue.

With fans such as Susie Bubble and Opening Ceremony, who stocked a capsule of Ryan Lo tees with refreshing kiwi and iridescent placement appliqués, SS14 is sure to be another irresistible (sugar) hit.
