What's on YOUR Xmas WISH LIST? I'll Bet I Know What's Missing...

With only 6 shopping days to go, it's safe to say that time is running out to find 'that' special gift for your nearest and dearest - well for the usual baubles and trinkets anyway! For a thoughtful gift that keeps on giving, why not put an ESP Gift Certificate in the stocking of your loved ones, and help them get one step closer to realising their dreams?

This week's mammoth deal comes in the shape of #ESPprofile - one of three brand spanking new package offers designed to increase the balance of your professional bank.

Profiles are all about compiling your typical electronic press kit - or EPK, in a very atypical way. Biographies, Press Releases, and ESPspotlight Reviews are the right tools to introduce You, announce your Product, and assess functionality in the real-life field...

Press Releases priced at £15 for production ONLY; please see
shop listings for domestic and International distribution rates

Purchase an Artist / Designer biography ('Chapter' - £9.99),

a Product Press Release ('Verse' - £15.00),

an ESPspotlight Review ('Finale' - £25.00),

or all three in a full EPK (£35.00),

from the brand new shop, that you will find on the ESP Facebook Page (don't forget to 'Like')!

Coming soon to the ESP website also, you will shortly be able to purchase ALL ESP services from the official store on Facebook AND the ESP hub!

ESPspotlight Reviews are £15, with the exception of
Event Reviews, priced at £25.
For now though (well until Sunday at least), rest assured that you can purchase any one of the three items in the new ESPprofile bundle, and receive the other two, completely FREE! At the risk of reminding you all of 2012's most annoying celebrity saying - I do believe that's what is otherwise known as 'Winning' all-round!

Now Get Cracking! You've no time to waste - and that WISH LIST isn't getting any smaller!

Happy Shopping...

Artist GPS: Can Your Audience Find You? + 'Lost In Music' Competition, March Music in the ESPspotlight

Yesterday I was interviewed for an upcoming white paper on Marketing. One of the questions touched on a topic I've been itching to bring you for awhile now. In working on another project this weekend, I came up against what is probably one of my Top 3 Pet Peeves in this Industry! Whatever your talent, if you are a Creative of any kind, WHY do people need heat-seeking missiles to find you?

This weekend, I met an Artist. When asked where I could find some of his work, he gave me a web address and forewarned: "I need to add some stuff, though...". Fair enough, when you're a one person band, it's not always possible to update everything you need to, as often as you need to do it - I can attest to that! Venturing onto the site yesterday though, I discovered that not only does he need to "add some stuff", but the only thing on it was his profile name!
Music Releases are NOT Covert Ops - they should only be a secret if you're BOWIE!
A similar occurrence happened recently, when another Performer said that I wouldn't find him or his work online, because he doesn't "like to be too 'out there', y'see...I don't like to be that accessible..." I (don't) see. Just last month, whilst scouting artists to fill some open slots in the next #FindOutFriday cycle (Coming Soon, Stay Tuned!) I eventually stopped finding it amusing and incredulous, and instead began finding it increasingly ANNOYING that so many of you have websites and profiles with NO music on them! There was contact information for bookings though... In my best McEnroe impression, I gotta say: "C'mon! You CanNOT be SERIOUS!"

Would you hire a Photographer having seen no prior examples of their work? How about a Make Up Artist, Hairdresser or Barber with no portfolio examples? I thought not. So why in the name of all that is Holy, would you expect anyone to hire you to perform, with no proof that you have the skills to justify a hire fee?

In your defence Artists, I will say, it's not just you. The whole idea for my #ESPshowcase packages, which create foundation starter  packs for businesses who have yet to venture into the online world, emanated from my not being able to find a hairdressers in the town I upped sticks and moved to at the end of last year. The huge difference is, that as Musicians, you are not bricks and mortar shops! Their main customer base already exists for one thing - they have walk-in clientèle! For another, they are restricted by locale. There is not a market in the world that if packaged correctly, you could not sell to; so there shouldn't be a corner of it that your product is not available in.

Let me dispel your confusion once and for all: Whether you are a Musician, a Designer, or an Artist of ANY kind - when you have a product to sell (which all of you do), then there is no such thing as 'remaining mysterious', by being difficult to find online; only recurring incidents of recklessly squandered sales and missed opportunities. STOP the non-sense!

There are several easy to use, free platforms for Musicians out there, that allow you to showcase your abilities. If you're not comfortable with the ReverbNations, Soundclouds or even Facebooks of the world, online forums have evolved enough now, that you can Create Your Own Ã  la LekLane!

'LekLane' is the home of Producer, Artist, Musician and Songwriter, Lekhem
When it came to setting up Lekhem's shop, we wanted to cover every medium in a way that best reflected his personality, talents and interests. Forging his own path and following none, Lekhem is a firm believer in 'Making your Own Lane'; thus when it came time to build his online HQ, there was no question as to the title...

If you're not the most technologically savvy, that's still no excuse. That 'Practice makes Perfect' saying didn't come into existence by chance; keep trying until you get comfortable or, if it's really not for you, then ask someone for a helping hand or, better still - hire a *ahem* professional! This is the point where you run out of excuses, because I'm giving you the opportunity to resolve that problem from now until Sunday. Read on for details...

Win the biggest giveaway this blog has ever had, by answering ONE easy question! Up for grabs is a complete ESP Artist Development Starter's Package (priced at £90), consisting of the following:

AND, as if all that's not enough; quote #MarchMusic at the time of ordering and get ALL of the above for £45! I don't want to say that you'd be mad to pass up this opportunity, but you wouldn't exactly be sane, now would you?!

So now you know what you get, it's time to explain how you get it:

1. Email your answer by 10:00AM tomorrow morning.

2. Tweet confirmation of your entry to ESP Ltd. on Twitter, using the #MarchMusic hashtag.

3. LIKE EricaSharlette Promotions Ltd. on Facebook.

Tell me that it could be easier than that?! Ok, now have yourselves a practice run to get warmed up. In the last competition I asked you to:

Name the clothing label that Justin Timberlake co-founded?

The answer was William Rast. See? Easy!

Today's question isn't any harder, all you have to do is take yourself over to LekLane, have a goosey gander around if you haven't done so before, then come back and tell me:

What is the name of Lekhem's MUSIC Page?

What's your take on today's topic? Are you an Artist who believes restricting your content and accessibility will help your career? Why? In what way? Tell me in the Comments Box below...

Have a good short week humpday!

#ESPspotlight Review: 7 Days, 7 Mixtapes - 7: 'Grandeur Pulse' by Lekhem

Here lies the first in my '7 days, 7 mixtapes', Valentine's guide, where I give you some musical suggestions to help you set the mood for 'The Big Night'. It's only right that I start at home with our resident sexpot and his most recent EP, Grandeur Pulse. You didn't think Lekhem was going to release a project without your reading what I had to say about it, did you? Come on now, I think we all know better!

It's the 'Lovers' time of year and so I decided to save my take on the 21st December EP for the period it's most suited to! Diving straight into my first #ESPspotlight music review of the new year (don't worry, there are many more to follow); when Lekhem first broke down the title of his second Instrumental and final release of 2012, I had no idea that it was to be his most apt yet...

'KrateDiggin The Instrumentals Mixtape', March 2012
Granted a brief, October preview of two standalone instalments completely different to the sound of his first Instrumental offering; no-one was more keen to hear the direction of this mixtape than Yours Truly.

His determination to come straight out of left-field was never more evident than on my first listen, when that opening track literally smacked me in the ear. Sort of. Ok, metaphorically speaking. No Chris Brown'ing of family members round here...

Bigger, 'Grandeur' and larger than life; there is a braggadociousness in the introduction that takes Lekhem into a new musical era, all of his own creation. Where 'KrateDiggin' gave you an insight into the calm, affable, friendly musician's son from round the left-London way; with 'Grandeur Pulse', he somehow managed to achieve something unusual in most Artists/Producers on the scene today - he produced a project under his 'Artist' persona. Still with me?

What I mean by that, is in 'Grandeur Pulse', the cocky confidence of 'The Rapper', meet the elite skills of 'The Producer'. Both reign equally supreme and dominant for the first time in a complete body of work. So when 'Heavenly' uses that sample to whack you upside of the head with what sounds like a brand new song entirely - know that the Wisconsin / Kingston native has only knocked you through the first of twelve bedroom rounds.

The next blow comes courtesy of the standout track of a mixtape full of big hitters. 'Feeling Right' is an actual insult because the sample is put to better use in a chorus and hook, than the full original. It's one of those 'stuck in your head for days' type of tracks that make you feen for an out of reach 'Play' button, instead of a frying pan. No brain-bashing required, like the best you've ever had - this one you don't want to end.

This is where it becomes clear that this project is a testimony to the heyday of 90's R&B. Those golden, glory days when everyone brought their 'A' game and REAL musical talent was 10 a penny. Though the original is more current, the distinction of Lekhem's arrangement and futuristic gloss is what peppers this particular Instrumental with 'old skool' flavour and heat. It's only at the track's close that you realise you've been duped but, it's been done with such finesse that by that point, you fail to actually care...

Download 'Grandeur Pulse' now
'ComeAndTalk' is a straight cruise of a track; one that you completely zone out to. Drive to it, kick back, or roll in the hay... I endorse playback on full-blast through headphones to this (in complicit knowledge that you are jeopardising your own hearing with the bass and thus cannot sue me if you go deaf. It may be worth the sensory loss, but YOU ARE forewarned and I am uninsured).

'Best You Have' was the second of two previews I heard prior to the full project's release ('Heavenly' being the first). Now it's entirely possible I put a slight spook in him with this one; being a firm advocate of not messing with greatness and warning him off several of my favourite classics. In true Lekhem fashion, he delivered the most insolent response possible and sampled an anthem made great by not one, but two timeless icons. And that reworked title was just an extra jab while sporting a grin full of Wisconsin's strongest cheddar (Wisconsin > Cheese State > cheesy grin - geddit?)...

The first of my non-favourites, bass-heavy 'Gimme' has the feel of a transition track that keeps the pace; like one of those marathon runners that the pack struggle to keep time with for a period, but who you know are never going to win the race. Lulling you into a false sense of security; you wouldn't be blamed for thinking the blows were about to stop coming with this one. For me, it's the soundtrack to a break in the 'action'.

Saddle up quick though, as this is where the next ride begins. 'Caddy' is a track full of bare cheek; where The Jamerican One draws you into another annoying round of 'Name That Sample' (I remember the 'good ole days' when I used to win every round of this game...I imagine the newfound difficulties he keeps hitting me with akin to levels on a computer game). I find it hard to imagine how a vocalist could better this one, but consider this my personal call out to try. It's another prime example of this mixtape confusing you into forgetting that there are no actual new vocals on this entire project. You find yourself singing along to the clever use of sampled clips from the original song samples and four tracks in, you find yourself under the mistaken impression that this Extended Play is a full blown album. Again, a standout heavy hitter that should end in you hollering at the top of your lungs, one way or another.

'Butterfly Tattoo' is the first of what I like to call 'The Film Score Moments'. It's where the mixtape goes mentally 'visual', for a mix of film genres in keeping with the musical cocktail. For me, this one is total 'Indie flick material'. In French. With subtitles. Sexy in a weirdly dark way and generically confusing with that bass; visions of starving artists in Parisian lofts, painting nudes, dining on bread and brie comes to mind...Don't ask, just listen, you'll get it.

Download 'Grandeur Pulse' from Dat Piff now...
'The Craze' is the perfect follow up to all of that imagery. Living up to the name, this is Lekhem's Pied Piper moment; only instead of a flute, this one hypnotises with Fruity Loops, as he bops through West London's streets, enticing you wayward kids. There's no doubt  you'll fall prey to the musical Candyman; the only question is whether you'll forgive yourself in the morning, for the bedroom vices these tracks inspire tonight...

I nicknamed 'Cruise Ship' the 'P&O song' within its first 6 seconds of play. Not listening to this under a baking Sun, reclined on a deck chair in your itsy bitsy, metallic one-piece with something chilled and fruity in your glass is a crime against your own birth. Yes that shiny one piece extends to you adventurous fellas too - you're granted a 3:57 spandex pass, it's pace is that hypnotic. You're taken aback by the way in which the sample is used, but only in a 'coasting the waves, lull you to sleep with the Sun kissing your skin', kind of way. Aaah, it's good stuff is that...Hey, I told you it gets visual, I accept no blame for where my mind is taken. That's the art in, well, Art - it's open to experiment...I mean interpretation...

'Blue Pulse' is a serious R&B slice, laced with a 'whine up yuh waist' dose of Jamaica. Whether pon di dancefloor or the bedroom - bodies will move to this one. If 'KrateDiggin' had 'Rum Punch', then this is Lekhem aka Lexington's likkle dose of Malibu...

You'd be forgiven for thinking 'Jag Love' was somehow related to the 90s airforce TV show - I know I did, but you would also be mistaken. A tribute to my favourite male group of the late 90s to date; Lekhem once again samples an original to create an entirely different track. Only the true R&B heads will win in this 'Name That Sample' round; though I'm sure with good teamwork, scoring can *ahem* be achieved by other means...

'Our Time' is the last of 'The Film Score Moments'. Evoking a feeling of being suspended in time, something about it reminds me of a mainstream 80s film with a well-concealed Soul truncheon in its underpants. You would never get that much bass in a 'License To Drive', 'The Breakfast Club' or anything starring a Corey or a Molly. Maybe something with a little Vanity though...it leaves you wanting to watch 'The Last Dragon' and questioning why the fear of flammable chemicals never halted jheri curl wearers. Ok maybe that last part is just me, but a Universal question it still should be, no? Back to the topic at hand - though full of the tempestuous joys of young love, this isn't one of the set's biggest for me. That being said, it is the perfect slow finish to an epic compilation.

Infectious, mesmerising, seductive. It was a bit of a mockery for Lekhem to describe this to me as "a bit of a sexy tape". I'm willing to put money on babies already in the incubation stage (expect namesakes around August). The only thing that could have bettered this project overall, would have been to hear a few verses match the calibre of the production, but hey, there's always the next release, right Lek? Hint, red-label, 18+ certified, hint...

ESP Yearbook and Blog Awards 2012!

With less than 24 hours to go, the end of 2012 is nigh and everyone - including Yours Truly, is in that retrospective frame of mind.

It's been an absolutely MASSIVE year for this blog; beyond comprehension in every way and every single feature has been memorable. Never in a million did I imagine being nominated for one award, never mind two. I didn't need, or expect to win, the unexpected audience nominations were more than enough! As for your kind attention well; it was a proud moment to receive that 30,000th all-time visitor hit for the last 15.5 months, 5 days ahead of tonight's midnight target. Since just under 27,000 of those were this year alone, you can imagine my bewilderment at now being only a few hours away from reaching that 30-spot just for 2012. The very concept of either boggles the mind and all I can say is the biggest of THANK YOU'S for taking the time out.

I'm not mad enough to think that you stop by here for me though! You love the people I'm featuring (which is good to know, so I shall endeavour to keep up that calibre in 2013). In light of that, I thought I'd first of all give you a little behind the scenes look at YOUR Top 10 Most Read Features of 2012:

  1. #ESPspotlight Review: 'Hotei at The Roundhouse'
  2. #FindOutFriday with StooShe!
  3. 'Queens of Diamonds' (10 Deer Oh Deer HarleQueens - #ESPspotlight Jubilee Special)
  4. #FindOutFriday with Charli-Anne Shirley!
  5. 'Remember HIS Time' (Michael Jackson #ESPspotlight Special)
  6. #FindOutFriday with Kevin Writer (Def Jam US Artist & Producer)
  7. #FindOutFriday Valentine's Special - 'Battle of the Sexes'!
  8. #ESPspotlight Interview: Andy Piccos of 'Stitchin Business'
  9. #FindOutFriday with Beckii Cruel
  10. #ESPspotlight Review: HYPER JAPAN Part ONE: 'Friday HighDay'!
I find it fascinating to see your favourites, but for my last post of this indefinable year, I also wanted to bring you mine. If you've been with me all year, then you know I'm not one to do things the 'normal' way; so I decided to say Thank You for all of your support with a little downloadable offering...

Enjoy 2012's 'Best Bits' from my perspective in the first ever EricaSharlette Ltd. Promotions Yearbook and Blog Awards! I hope you enjoy it - let me know if you're feeling the nostalgia too!

On behalf of the entire ESP Family, we wish you an abundance of Health, Happiness and Prosperity for 2013.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2 UNlimited...

No folks, I'm sorry to disappoint, but I'm not bringing you an update on Pete Waterman's supremely hot House music duo from the 80's...

If you Follow ESP Ltd. on Twitter, or have Liked our Facebook Page, then you will likely have caught a nostalgic stroll down memory lane earlier this week, as I recapped a few choice moments in celebration of our 2nd Birthday...

Clearly this called for one thing and one thing only, to round off this week...a mini #ESPspotlight on EricaSharlette Promotions Ltd.!

Starting right there - you would be surprised how many people don't realise that 'ESP' is a play on words - one of the main tools I work with - that ties the company name with the type of marketing that we specialise in. Someone recently asked for an explanation of my Twitter handle 'ESintheP' - it all makes sense if you just look at the name! And as for that Extra Sensory Perception? Well simply put, it's my goal to bring an insight to products that go beyond the obvious.

Drassick DIGITAL has 2 captivating eyes for the Ladies...

When North London Hip Hop MC Drassick DIGITAL needed a rebrand, I felt he needed a visual that matched his love of gadgets and technology. So with her Jelli graphic design hat on, I asked our Charli-Anne to come up with a genetic 'key' that was literally 'radio active'... See what we did there?! Fingerprints are all well and great, but this Ladies favourite had a gift for eye-catching attention without ever needing to speak, so I wanted to make sure we incorporated that, but also something where Music + DNA was implied. With a face built for recognition, what better fit than a literal Digital Signature...

Bright-eyed Drassick's rebrand centred around a retinal scan logo

Press kits have a tendency to be pretty bog standard in my humble opinion! I receive as many as I create and when I look them over, I quickly lose interest if there isn't something different to catch my eye. To me, typical headshots say little more than 'Casting Director's Mugshot Equivalent'. That's something I ensure I combat with those that I produce.

So when it came to Lekhem's first major photoshoot, I wanted to showcase his visual potential, his versatility and also to give an insight into the personalities of such a complex and intriguing Artist / Musician, making 'Identity' the ideal starting point for the themes I had in mind. There is always so much confusion surrounding the American / Jamaican heritage of West London's own 'Alien Resident', that I decided to take a selection of the monikers that others had bestowed on him and create some visuals to match...

'Home' is where the Heart is;
with Lekhem, that's in Music.
'Concepts Photoshoot: Alien Resident'

The mass of colour confusion in our graffiti location tied really well with the homage we were paying to Lekhem's American roots. Red, White and Blue with a twist; no matter what he does, duality is a constant theme. The Man and the Artist, the American and the Brit...it was always a quirk to me that visually, the foreign 'Alien' and the British 'Resident', are matched in the very same hues.

Equally, there's no doubt that like Drassick, our Lek has his own share of female fans...I soon learned that those 'Ladies Love Lek', making it a no-brainer to use one of those aforementioned nicknames as another theme...

Wisconsin AND West London's
very own Secret Agent...
'Concepts Photoshoot: Lexington'

Though other connotations are implied, something about 'Lexington' said 'Modern Day Bond' to me, from the first moment I heard it - and that was before I discovered what a (worryingly) huge fan of MI6's secret weapon he really is!

Where earlier looks on the day called for a lot of hyperactive colour; this concept called for calm. All about the 'attitude'; simple, non-distracting, statement pieces were all the wardrobe we needed to make these shots work.

'Concepts: Part One' was an all-day shoot with the superbly-talented Jay Donn of BlackWatch Photography and definitely one of my favourite projects of the past two years. View more shots from the day via Lekhem's Facebook Page.

When asked for his personal favourite since he joined the #ESPfamily though, he chose differently:

"My favourite project so far with ESP, has got to be #TheRaiseEP. That's the very first project that we worked on together from the ground up, after joining forces a few months after the release of 'Str8 Out Da Oven'.

The reasons why it's my favourite so far, is the amount of work that we had to do, in order to make sure everything would be en pointe. Travelling to different studios all over London, photoshoots, radio interviews, shows and performances, the lot... We created a lot of unforgettable memories with that project!

MORE TO COME!"

Download #TheRaiseEP,
along with Lekhem's back catalogue to date,
from 'The Food' at LekLane...

And as for us Girls? Well we just wanna have FUN, right?

I have done so many projects with Charli-Anne as both Deer Oh Deer Ltd's and Jelli's Marketing Manager, that it's near impossible to pick a favourite!

We've done press 'kicks' - otherwise known as press kits you get a 'kick' out of...

'Red Carpet' AW10
Vintage Rose Clutch
'Pink Passion' AW10
Vintage Rose Clutch
But I suppose if I really have to pick one thing, it's going to have to be the limited edition, Vintage Rose Clutch bags - my very first project with the label. My first press release under my own name, it featured in Niji Magazine to begin with and is arguably when I was bitten by the writing bug!

And when it comes to just me? Well it's very hard to separate myself from any of the projects that I've worked on but, I've had a blast developing this blog! I could name a few individual pieces but, more than anything it is the feedback that I receive from your lovely selves, that has been my highlight. It's your comments, viewing figures and the three award nominations that 'The ES in the P' blog received this Summer, that have made the long, late nights like these worthwhile.

PLEASE #StayTuned to the goings on here, because there's only bigger and better to come! In this for the long haul, I entitled this round up '2 UNlimited' for a reason...

Until the next one!
