CYNTHIA ERIVO is in the ESPspotlight...

Flashback roughly two and a half years, to a time when Yours Truly attended a sold-out Mike Hough concert at O2 Islington one warm July evening.

Before I had even entered the packed out auditorium full of 'Houghlians', I heard the most amazingly beautiful, female voice that I had come across in quite some time. She launched into a rendition of Frank Ocean's 'American Wedding' that still sends chills through me when I recall it. I never forgot the name - in fact from that moment forward, I have just been waiting for the perfect opportunity to get her in the #ESPspotlight.

This young lady is a force to be reckoned with folks. She's got pipes that can lead you into danger if you let them. The epitome of talent in the recording arena, and also on the nationwide stage - she's fresh off the Sister Act tour, where she played the lead role in the stage production, under the helm of none other than the legendary Ms. Whoopi Goldberg herself! I'm not keeping you from her a second longer - Miss Cynthia Erivo kicks off Performance Week for March Music in the ESP spotlight...

Welcome Cynthia! I'm really excited to finally have you on, having been blown away by your performance supporting Mike Hough over a year and a half ago! Thank You for your time. I'm going to dive straight into the good stuff...

1. For those unfamiliar, would you please introduce yourself and what you do in your own words?

Cynthia Erivo

Well, My Name is Cynthia Erivo and I am a singer and an actress who has played many venues all over the UK as myself and a plethora of other characters including Deloris Van Cartier (the Whoopie Goldberg role) in the UK and Ireland tour of Sister Act.

2. You’re a RADA Alumni – as a former Stage School Child myself, I think you view and approach Music differently once you make that transition from listening to performing. What would you say is the most valuable lesson in the classroom and how does it compare with the biggest lesson you've learned since getting ‘on the job’, so to speak?

Well RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) isn't a stage school it’s a Drama school and focuses on acting and the art of it, singing is something I've done since I was 5, so listening and performing go hand in hand, listening is what makes a good performance, at least that’s what I think.

I learned pretty fast that being on stage, doing a show, acting, singing is all about communication. Putting your message or your point across and being willing to accept the reply from whoever's on stage with you, or whoever's in the audience. If what you do is one-sided, you might as well not be there.

You are very kindly kicking off ‘Performance’ Week in my month-long, March Music Special, so thank you for that first of all. Aside from wanting to talk more about your talent anyway, you are the perfect person to start with though, because you cover two areas rolled into one. You've supported American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino not once but twice on tour, and you also played the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier in the UK & Ireland Tour of 'Sister Act', under the helm of the one and only Whoopi Goldberg – we'll come to that in a second!

3. First - Stadium vs. National Theatre Tour. Can you describe those experiences? Did they compare in anyway? What were the biggest contrasts apart from the obvious?

Well to be honest, they are both as scary as each other; you're in front of thousands of people and you are LIVE!!! No hiding! I think I love the thrill more than anything and the energy you get from a live audience it’s electric; it means that every night is different and it keeps me on my toes!!!

The only real difference is what I'm doing on stage and I guess when it’s just me, I'm completely exposed.

4. Those were two, very big names that you worked with in quite a short window of time. Please talk through your experiences with both, what are some of the lessons that working with professionals of their calibre has taught you, and how have you applied what Fantasia and the incomparable Ms. Goldberg taught you in your career to date?

Honestly, I only met one of them - Whoopie, she told me to "rock it and have fun", so I did.

Fantasia rushed past with her bodyguards, on and off stage and said nothing, so that gig, I did for me and I swore to myself that if ever I did a concert I would make a point of meeting the support acts, because that job is hard and scary.

I learned that hard work, kindness and fun go hand in hand.

One of the things I use this blog for, is to shine a realistic light on what it really takes for aspiring artists to reach their goals. It’s all very well seeing the glitz and the glamour, but there is little highlight on the tougher parts.

5. What did you find most difficult about performing in both avenues and how did you overcome those issues? Is there anything that you wish you would have handled differently?

When it comes to the theatre the hardest thing is keeping up your stamina and staying well, which at first glance seems simple, but when you're on 8-9 times a week, it's hard and you learn how to make a conscious effort of maintaining both!!

The confidence to ask for what you need took a while to rear its head, and I mean from asking about the sound to what you need to keep you and your voice healthy, these things are important! Just as important as graciousness (which by the way is extremely important).

I wouldn't handle anything differently. If I did, I wouldn't have learned anything.

To grow you have to learn.

Another area that doesn't have a lot of focus for aspiring artists is Management. I get a lot of enquiries from some very talented people who didn't start out from the professional route. They have the talent, but have no idea how to get started.

6. How did you go about obtaining both bookings? Can you talk through the process of securing your representation? Did you find them, or vice versa? How many did you go through? In a nutshell, what’s involved in the signing process?

I went to a Drama school, drama schools tend to put on plays and/or showcases - that’s where my agent and I found each other; she takes the bookings and keeps me on the straight and narrow. Up until recently, I took all my music bookings but now, for the meantime, my agent handles it all.

So I guess for music, I'm 'unmanaged' but managed. Management is a relationship so it’s really about finding a connection and building on it, when its right, you’ll know.

7. We’ve established that you’re also an unsigned recording artist. How do you juggle that whilst fulfilling stage commitments too? Do you have to put one on hold to focus on the other or are you doing them simultaneously?

I work hard, so it all runs alongside each other, simultaneously.

8. This one’s for me personally! As I mentioned earlier, I've seen you perform and caught quite a few of the performances you've done online now as I got down to the business of research. I heard a lot of different styles and influences in those!

Please name 3 artists who have influenced you and in what way they’ve affected your style?

Brandy - vocal gymnastics
Annie Lennox – haunting melodies
Aretha/ Ella – vocal power and control

So much more but you only asked for 3.

9. With the experience that you've gained since graduating, what’s the biggest word of advice that you can impart to those starting out now, and what you tell yourself if you could go back to when you started out?

Be yourselfdon’t be afraid to know and say what you want and enjoy yourself.

I’d tell me to embrace my vulnerability it's gotten me a long way.

10. Finally, what’s next for you?

More writing, maybe a little single release, can’t say anymore than that or I'll get into trouble, but you’ll know soon enough xxx...

Nobody Does It Better? Lost In Music Competition, March Music In The #ESPspotlight

So for the final day of Creativity Week, I wanted to give you all something a little bit different. A chance happening a few days ago reminded me that I haven't had a good Battle on here since the Oh So Epic 'Valentine's Day Battle Of The Sexes' last year.

If you're following me on Instagram or Twitter, then you will have fallen prey to my regular #nowplaying status updates, and know that there is music playing around me - constantly. So when an absolutely awful cover version of a song that I'm quite partial to came on the radio the other day, my familiar indignation at the audacity to touch something untouchable reared it's ugly head. Once the (mental) smoke cleared though, I remembered a conversation I had with my once upon a time Music Teacher Mr McCarthy, in my sprightly teen years.

I wasn't trying to hear the Words of Wisdom, so I Let It Be...
I made the mistake of referring to the song we were about to rehearse as "better" than the original. Boy did I regret that...I got a lengthy talking to about never referring to one as 'better' than the other, without taking serious stock by comparison - and even then, celebrating the efforts of both by recognising each attempt as 'unique'. Now whilst I can look back and fully grasp the wisdom I was too naive to back then; I still think that in certain cases, "better" is the appropriate description when a cover version just isn't up to par! I'm a firm believer that you cannot improve upon perfection - so don't waste time (or my patience) trying! By contrast though, I can also think of quite a few instances where the cover "betters" the original, and that's the basis of the final Creativity topic:

I see cover versions as a big loss for someone - be it the original artist, or the one paying homage. If your cover doesn't equal the original, then you've embarrassed yourself with a feeble attempt. But is it worse when you do better the original, and show up the artist that you were trying to honour? Get comfy and don't forget to share your opinions in the comment box at the end as I give you some prime examples of a lose-lose situation in my 'Battle of The Betters'!

Round 1: 'Ain't No Sunshine' Bill Withers vs. (Little) Michael Jackson

The Ultimate example of a tribute 'bettering' the original in my humble opinion, this is the very reason the idea of a 'Battle' formed after the initial question rose in my mind. I heard about the greatness of MJ's version from my earliest, and longest serving Music Teacher (cue: I Get It From My Mama), with a bucketful of salt several years before I was practically schooled on the truth of the matter. Refusing to accept anyone, even my beloved Michael could touch Bill's classic, I was silenced as a young, unknowing one before the end of Michael's intro...

     x

Verdict: I'm sorry Mr. Withers, you lost your girl and your song because the Cover takes the Crown...(I still bow down at your guitar, and offer endless towels for that sweat-filled, musical brow though).

Round 2: 'Love's In Need Of Love Today' Stevie Wonder vs. BLACKstreet

Remember that aforementioned telling off? Well this here is the very cause of it! I've since learned the error of my young ways - I mean this IS Mr. Steveland Morris we're talking about, after all...

    x

Verdict: I even argued with my own Mum over this one! I was wrong to say it was "better" (see? I can admit it); but much as I adore my Stevie, I'm sorry Mother and Mr McC - I still prefer the cover!

Round 3: 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore' Rose Royce vs. Faith Evans & Mary J. Blige

This makes me sad. One of my favourite songs of all time, my favourite group of the Disco era, and two of my favourite female voices...Ever. This should be a nobrainer, right? And yet...

  x

Verdict: This cover version should never have happened and I'd like to erase it from Time.

Round 4: 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' Gladys Knight & The Pips vs.  Marvin Gaye

Yep. I really took it there. How do you choose between two of the greatest artists of all time? Hmmm...I don't know if I can, it feels a little sacrilegious to me - take a look:

     x

Verdict: I'm sorry Ms. Gladys, I bow down and worship at the Temple of Your Hairbrush (All Hers, Au Natrel, not more than a hot comb and burner in sight, doncha know)...but I'm afraid Marvin's pace and tone bring a whole new level of drama to reinforce the lyrics. I gotta be #TeamMarvin.

Round 5: 'Light My Fire' Jim Morrison vs. Will Young

I had no interest in the short-lived Pop Idol until I caught Will's rendition of this song. I didn't actually watch the show, but '#1 Teacher' did, and was quite smitten with him (she still has the 2002 calendar I bought her, in the original packaging...). I remember being in the room that Saturday evening when his massive breakout moment first aired and gave me chills. His performance stopped me in my tracks and from then on, I watched almost every episode until his win. BUT...The Doors are Rock History, sooo...to the vocal smackdown:

   x

Verdict: I'm going with the Young (Alive) One - no disrespect to the original, but I feel that substances involved made it a (purple) haze of confusion before it even reaches halfway. Thank you Will for your sobriety in the name of the Music. You win.

Round 6: 'Love Hangover' Diana Ross vs. Mariah Carey

If you're a regular reader, then you had to know good'n'well that it was only a matter of time before Ms. M made an appearance in this Music Month Special. It took all my power and might to hold her back this long! Now here's the thing - and hold onto something because it's gonna be a shocker. Apart from a few choice moments, I'm really not a fan of Diana Ross in her solo moments. I prefer her with the big voices of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard making her sound good. Yeah, I said it. I shall prepare to be stoned in the street. When all is said and done though, this 1975 classic is one of those choice moments I spoke of, so what is one to do? You tell me...

  x

Verdict: Hate to be a Heartbreaker, but Mariah's mashup of the 'Vintage' with the New, takes the diamond-encrusted crown.

Round 7: 'Impossible' Shontelle vs. James Arthur

Currently at No. 39 in the Country-wide Top40 chart, Arthur's single has racked up over 13 million YouTube views...Seriously. Now I don't want to say that this was the song that spurred the idea for this entire feature as earlier mentioned...but I will.

  x

Verdict: Whoever suggested this should be slapped by the Pimp Hand of Music. And Shontelle's Mama.

Round 8: 'All I Could Do Was Cry' Etta James vs. Beyoncé

I remember watching Bey play Ms. Etta in Cadillac Records and being pleasantly surprised. I also remember ole' Ms. Etta being less impressed and threatening to "whoop her a*s" after the President's inauguration ball, in (non) guilty amusement. Personally, I started to respect Beyoncé's level of talent way more after seeing the film - I thought she really pushed through! This was her crowning vocal moment for me...

  x

Verdict: Push through Mrs Carter did, but there is no comparison with the original.

Round 9: 'Natural Woman' Carole King vs. Aretha Franklin vs. Mary J. Blige

Yes I know. These numbers just don't add up. But the thing is, I couldn't whittle it down to two, since the legendary Ms. Carole wrote the song with the equally legendary Ms. Aretha in mind. She herself refers to her own composition as "Aretha's Song", and says there is no comparison - not even her own version! But y'see...I love me some Carole King and her original version too! And as for Ms. Mary J? Well I had to give the great lady an opportunity to redeem herself after that earlier mistake in somebody's intoxicated judgement, when they pressed that record button...

  x

Verdict: What are ya nuts? There's no BETTER here - these are three of the GREATS!

Round 10: 'I Will Always Love You' Dolly vs. Whitney

As with Carole King, Ms. Dolly also praised Whitney's offering as incomparable to any other - including her own. I think we all know why...

  x

Verdict: For me personally, Ms. Whitney's version is a classic that is stamped in time. That is a fact and it's going nowhere - but is one that I still find quite difficult to listen to, now that we are intrinsically linked (she died on my bornday). I no longer want to hear anyone cover it (not that I ever did), as with the song, comes the memory of her final farewell, being carried out of the church, with every person in attendance (and Yours Truly watching on YouTube) reduced to puddles on the floor. That's what a real legacy can do to a group of strangers who have never even met one another. In the least humorous way possible - it's SO Emotional. Too much, in fact.

Encore: 'She's Out Of My Life' Michael Jackson vs. Marc Nelson vs. Mya

What we have here, are two prime examples of why you Shouldn't. Mess. With The Classics. I'm sorry, Marc Nelson, Mya, I'm a fan of you both - but you both should have left this one alone...

  x

And here's why you don't mess with perfection...

Now trust me when I tell you that I could go on with this forever...I mean just consider my (dis)honourable mentions:

  • Gloria Gaynor vs. The Jacksons - 'Never Can Say Goodbye'...one of my all-time favourite songs, never mind cover versions!
  • Michael Jackson & The Jackson 5 vs. Mariah Carey - 'I'll Be There'...It literally took 3 years before I would listengradually learn to accept, then love this. Not even a joke. I don't care if you are my Divine Don Diva MC - DON'T. Touch. The Classics!
  • Harry Nilsson vs. Mariah Carey - 'Without You'...can't listen to either, I'm afraid. Despite my love of the flaxen-haired latter, overplay to the end of days means I find them both painful.
  • Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell vs. Tyrese & Coko - 'If This World Were Mine'...actually not a bad cover, B+.
  • Adina Howard vs. The Sugababes - 'Freak Like Me'...No Comment.
  • En Vogue vs. Little Mix - 'Don't Let Go (Love)'...My Mother always told me that if you don't have anything nice to say, then close your mouth and stop trapping flies, for they have homes to go to that are steaming...so it's best I say no more on the subject at this point. Except that En Vogue should sue. That is all.

Someone should win something after that, don't you think? Why not you? 'Lost In Music', Day One (Competition) - Music Month in the #ESPspotlight

SO! If you caught the Music Month introduction earlier, then you will remember my talking about Music that we have a connection with, and understanding how that affects us emotionally.

In keeping with the theme, I will be posting a different song each day this month and sharing my personal connection with it. To spice things up though, I'm also going to throw a trivia question in. If you give me the correct answer, you will WIN that week's Special Offer - entirely FREE of charge!

I'll be rewarding ONE lucky winner, chosen at random every day, throughout March. Entries must be submitted by email (only), by 20:13 every night to be in with a chance of winning (T&C's apply). So you ready? Ok, here we go...

For me to pick a specific earliest childhood memory is absolutely impossible, because I was immersed in almost all genres from the womb! If I had to pick one of a multitude of favourites though; it would have to be the rare Sunday mornings with my beloved Mum, when she wasn't working. She would throw on her favourite white gypsy top with red piping and green and yellow embroidery, and put her (then) state of the art stereo to good use with her cracking music collection, while she tackled the ironing.

One of the cassettes tapes that I would dawdle around her bedroom just to hear, was the Atlantic Soul Classics compilation. That my friends, is when I discovered one of my earliest favourite collaborations:

'Tramp' by Carla Thomas and Otis Redding.

In love with Otis' voice and Carla's sass before I knew what love was; to this day, my Mumma still tells the story of the two appearing on Tops of the Pops in the 70s...Carla in her red-sequinned gown, with white fur stole; Otis in his overalls and straw hat, with a blade of grass in between his teeth. I had the privilege of catching the performance a few years ago, so now fully understand the splendour she described, but unfortunately it isn't online for me to share with you. I have managed to locate the official video for you though - all you need to do is listen to get the gist of why I was so taken with the song from such an early age...

What is not to love about this song?! I absolutely adore it like I just heard it again for the first time. It completely epitomises the theme of this week, by evoking memories of great times with my Lady Mum - right down to the very last detail of the red espadrilles that she would team with that gypsy top!

SO I guess you want to get to the prize part, now right? Well here's your first question:

I mentioned a compilation earlier, full of some classic Soul anthems. One of them is a heartbreaking classic that went on to become the soundtrack for a Hollywood film of the same name

Name the song / film, the singer and the lead acting couple...

It's easy-peasy!

Answer with tomorrow's song selection - DON'T MISS IT!

Are you a fan of 'Tramp'? Share one of your own early childhood musical memories in the Comments Box below - what were you listening to?

Nitey-Nite!
ES ;)

Competition Terms & Conditions: Only one entry per person, per day. Prize applies to the 'ESPshowcase - Lights' package, and thus Twitter and Facebook accounts only. Prize offer relates to either a Facebook OR a Twitter account only. Entry deadline is 20:13 each day, winners will be notified via email within 24 hours.

Training Wheels...

I don't subscribe to being a snob in too many things. Just one area, if I'm honest - Music. If you're a regular on the ESP side of the street, then you'll know that I was spoon-fed Motown with Farley's Rusks, Stax and Chess (Records) with my pureed carrots and my signature wardrobe is still big hair and sparkles - preferably with tassels (less 'Showgirl', more 'Proud Mary' thank you very much)...

I do believe it was the late, great, Ms. Whitney who uttered a turn of phrase that stuck with me from the first moment I heard it. She may not have been it's originator, but it was when she described a very young Bobbi Kristina as a "Diva in Training" as she joined her onstage for a performance of 'My Love Is Your Love', that my mind derived a new mental hierarchy for today's ladies in the limelight...

To be a 'Diva', you have to have some mileage behind you (vocal, not just column print), you have to have 'The Chops'. You have to have a Class, a Grace and a Natural Aura that leaves those around you entranced. Why do you think Simon calls it 'The X Factor'? You have to have that something that just can't be bottled. If you go by Ms. Whitney's definition, then to my mind, the ladies of Destiny's Child for instance, are 'Divas in Training'; on the brink of graduating in a few years time but not quite there yet, even though they've been in the music business for more than two decades! If you weren't even born in that time, then unless you're taught by one directly, or the female version of a 'Little Michael Jackson' or a 'Little Stevie Wonder' (do your Motown homework if you're unfamiliar with the references, kids!) then the diamond-encrusted crown isn't for you - you just haven't earned it yet.

A 'Diva' isn't a label for just anyone, it's the title for a Queen, from my aforementioned snobbish point of view. I subscribe to that 'old school' mentality; you need to have 'paid your dues, to strut in the (jewel-encrusted) shoes'. You're not just recognised by one name because you've made it your stage name, oh no; you're so legendary that you don't need a surname, people just know who You are...You're Donna, you're Carole, you're Whitney, you're Cyndi, you're Mariah. When you throw, a 'Ms.' in front, then you really are the 'Big Guns': Ms. Patti, Ms. Tina, Ms. Chaka, Ms. Gladys, Ms. Aretha - well you get the picture...

Now, if you're wondering what on Earth inspired this little episode - well I have eight shapely syllables for you: VH1 Divas 2012. When I saw the line up of the inaugural show, it honestly made my little (wannabe Diva) heart swell for years to come - it was that monumental. Can we cast our minds back for a moment, to that joyous six minutes in 1998...

Whew...Praise Be after that, right? Now if you've caught an Entertainment News headline at all this week, then you very likely may have worked out where I'm going with this...No? Ok join with me in shock and horror:

The #VH1Divas2012 Line Up is as follows:

Miley Cyrus
Demi Lovato
Kelly Rowland
Ciara
Jordin Sparks

When I saw this line up, I thought it was someone's unfunny joke. Hosted by former American Idol contestant and runner up (ahem) 'DivoAdam Lambert, there are in my 'humble' opinion, all but two names listed who have earned the grades to qualify as 'Divas in Training' - one of those purely on talent, not time accrued. An MTV EMA line up? Well sure, they're perfect for that! But this is NOT a line up of DIVAS because there isn't ONE on there! The cruellest blow of all, is that they will be 'tributing (read insulting)' two of the greatest voices to leave the Earth this year - Whitney Houston and Donna Summer.

Now I'm sorry, but this is just so wrong, on so many levels, that I am hard pressed to find a right one. The level of talent on the show has obviously never matched that first line up, but this year? Well I think I'll just YouTube the performances of those two 'Divas in Training'. The rest I'll give a miss, methinks, because in the words of Ms Aretha, well they can('t) just take it on home.

VH1 Divas 2012 will air in the US on Sunday, December 16th. Check your local listings for the UK airdate. If you really want to...

Until next time!
ES ;o)
