Saint Intoxicate (No, Not Paddy)...'Lost In Music' Competition, March Music in the ESPspotlight

It's a Green Day across the world. The one day a year when the majority of the population just so happen to remember they're 1/1,000,000,006th Irish...thrice removed...through a (fifth) cousin...by marriageWhether whisky or warbling, the cause of your Sunday Spirit intoxication, and it's domination of your senses forms the basis of today's 'Lost In Music' Moment. (P)Raise either your glass or your Hymn book and Thank your (Land)Lord accordingly.

If you've ever read anything on this blog before, then I think you know by now, that I'm a sucker for a vocal that can take you places and do things to your insides; no matter where you are, or what you're doing in the world. There's a one female voice who has done that for me without even trying, since I was 8 years old. It took me a whole year to learn her name - which happened one day entirely by chance, and I have been a massive supporter of hers ever since, much to the chagrin and mystification of (far too) many.

Ms. Mariah Carey

A rare total package, it's not just that her vocal ability boggles the mind, or the fact that she seems to have written a song for every struggle and emotion that I personally have experienced in life - from my perspective, despite my being pretty sure I never told her about any of them - I mean I could be wrong on that...as we've established, intoxication covers all forms...It's the fact that she can do those things, have an unparalleled career and yet still manage to be one of the most humble humanitarians and sweetest, funniest and most down to earth people that I have ever been Blessed enough to encounter.

Part Irish (for real though), part Venezuelan-African-American. It's hard to believe that it's almost 8 years since this Singer-Songwriter released the album that ushered in a brand new era of her incomparable career. Proving that you should never underestimate the power of a good and talented woman; Mariah Carey swept the 2006 Grammy boards with 'The Emancipation of Mimi'. I don't know if it was the euphoria of the moment, or the culmination of turning a corner and taking stock of the road then travelled, but she performed her Gospel track 'Fly Like A Bird' like her very life depended on it, to the point where I was on my feet in my bedroom by it's end. A favourite track of mine to this very day, the inspirational and uplifting message is one that I personally cling to during those hard times that we all have behind closed doors, when you're just not sure how to cope...

And that my Dear Reader Friends, is what I like to call a 'Catch A Spirit' Moment. Is it her most 'technically perfect' performance? Not even close. But in this case, what makes it perfect, are it's imperfections. Not every note is on, there's clearly no lip-synching going on, it's fully live, and the belief in every single word and the Emotions - no pun intended - are everything. It's those real, raw and rough edges make the whole performance. When I'm struggling, I lock myself away and warble like a wannabe choir member who fell out the back pew - it helps and I believe!

When someone has the power to touch you with what they are saying, doing or sharing to a level that is unexplainable, through a connection that you don't understand - that is my very definition of Performance Art. See where I'm coming from? If you have any examples of your own, there's a Comment Box below with your name on it (well technically it's right above - either way, it's your spotlight moment)...

As for yesterday's competition? Well I asked you:

Erick Sermon sampled one of the greatest voices in music history, for one of the biggest tracks of this Millennium's first decade. The late, great artist is Motown Royalty:

The answer was: Marvin Gaye & Music.

Please tell me you got that?! Thanks for reading, please do share your thoughts and be sure to catch up on what you've missed this week. There have been some cracking Music Moments, if I do say so myself!
