#ESPspotlight Review: LONDON JEWELLERY WEEK, DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS - JEWEL EAST

Day One of London Jewellery Week and my first stop at Jewel East had this 10-day event off to a flying start.

In the space of one hour, 10 designers reminded me of what it is I love about creative arts. Almost all handmade, the intricacy in the detail, the vision in their forethought, and the grit in their determination left me inspired and affected by the intriguing sights. If you can honestly talk to these amazingly talented designers, listen to their stories and the creative background behind each piece that they create without being affected, then I honestly don't know what to tell you!

Here are just a few of my favourites from the opening day...

Ayaki Kanari rings
Ayako Kanari draws her inspiration from the Victorian era; when fashion accessories were made from human hair. Her silver and gold-plated designs favour a plaited-style and, because many of the accessories were worn by brides to be, their shape continuity replicate the infinity bond...At least they did to my untrained eye, as she explained her concept!

Michelle Oh bases her Twig and Coral designs
on her favourite natural environments

Michelle Oh was another design maven with beautiful handmade art. Drawing inspiration from natural everyday elements such as beaches and woods, her coral and twig-inspired pieces molded from actual bramble, left me speechless.

Marta Wlodarska, Creator,
The Amberwood Collection

'Amberwood' is the baltic amber and natural wood collection by Marta Wlodarska, who sands and polishes each handmade piece, before decorating with materials such as silver, linen and leather.

Mokume Gane earrings form part of a traditional African wedding custom
Karen Rothwell looks to her travels and cultural history for her creative muses, with arguably the most captivating backstory of the day. From tribal bridal sheet earrings layered sixteen times, to traditional Japanese techniques, each handmade piece carries a brilliant touch of history.

From catwalk creations like the piece above
to everyday wear, Agata Kosel prefers to let
the creations take their own shape...

All of the artists showcasing their works brought something fresh and unique to Jewel East, but none more so than Agata Kosel, whose unorthodox representation of the female form was absolutely stunning - even before she kindly explained what exactly I was looking at! From everyday fashion to catwalk art, it's no wonder she earned the Jewel East Shining Jewel Award for the handmade pieces that she cuts based on life drawings.

For more of the talented works on show, be sure to keep visiting the Jewel East Album on the ESP Facebook Page throughout the weekend - don't forget to follow, like and share!

Jewel East is taking place all weekend at Old Spitalfields Market (Saturday - 11-1700, Sunday - 10-1700). Entry is free, see the JW13 website for further details.

#ESPspotlight Review: AFTER EARTH (MOVIE)

Let me tell you why you need to see the new Smith family blockbuster, After Earth, out today.

Brit Sophie Okonedo stars as Will's wife, Faia Raige
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth is the coming of age story of young cadet Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his quest to make his father Cypher (Will Smith), proud. Set 100 years in the future, humans have pillaged the environment until the race as we know it are forced to evacuate our volatile planet in favour of 'Mankind's new home' - Nova Prime. Extreme weather conditions are far from the only Earthly danger though. Giving new meaning to the term 'Animal Kingdom', the food chain has a new Ruler. The 'Ursa' is a new breed of blind alien that literally preys on human fear. Notorious for being the only soldier to survive it in battle, the loss of his eldest daughter Senshi (ZoĆ« Kravitz) to the predator, who sacrificed herself to protect a young Kitai, has forced Cypher to retrain his emotional responses to an ironically inhuman default setting. Whilst this makes him the only adversary capable of defeating the alien, that lack of emotion strains the relationship with his now teenage son to breaking point by the time their spaceship crash lands right back on Earth.

The only survivors, Cypher is critically wounded and the only means of rescue is a distress beacon which of course, just so happens to be in the half of their ship that crashed a whole dark scary forest of a distance away, leaving the responsibility of raising the search and rescue alarm to Kitai (cue a chorus of 'Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My...'). Guided part way by a controlling Cypher, the journey provides the opportunity to accomplish far more than just getting from Point A to B. "Danger is very real, but fear is a choice" says the warrior dad. But with no choice but to rely on each other to survive; the father and son are forced to put those words to the test as they confront the biggest obstacle between them - who is really to blame for Senshi's death.

Currently 'tanking' at the US box office, with mostly (unfair) bad reviews, as much as this is a typical, Hollywood Sci-fi blockbuster (and thus outside of Shyamalan's wheelhouse); the action, incredible stunts and futuristic gadgets are actually the smallest point of interest in this production. With a storyline that  could (and has in some opinions) go so cheesily wrong, what is really gripping about this, are the struggles and internal battles between Father and Son. A rite of passage in it's truest definition of the term; the real story - and where Shyamalan succeeds - is about the struggle for acceptance between the two. Though a Sci-fi epic by genre, in reality this is a continuation of the relationship that we first witnessed in The Pursuit of Happyness. Smith Snr once commented on the 'little things' that made the on-screen chemistry between the two all the more real; the instinctive reflexes that would not exist between two actors coming together for the first time on set. When they argue, you believe it. When Cypher dominates and almost suffocates Kitai, you believe it. And as you watch Cypher's emotional response as he watches Kitai almost lose his life, you know that Will Smith is panicking at the too real fear of losing Jaden.

If you didn't know it before, or you thought his Karate Kid performance was the best that you were going to get from Jaden, know that you are very, very wrong. In this role, Smith Jr firmly establishes himself as a breakout star in his own right. Where most may have to worry about falling at the child-to-adult star hurdle; Jaden proves himself capable of standing on his own two feet throughout. One could argue that the entire production was set up to make him standout, with the original story being the brainchild of a father who not only took the backseat and gave him top billing, but also strengthens a production team that includes his mother (Jada Pinkett-Smith) and uncle (Caleeb Pinkett). But even without them, there is no way that you can dispute Master Jaden's talents when he not only steps out from his father's acting shadow, but goes toe-to-toe with it, cementing his own...

I had previously said that Iron Man 3 was my film of the year so far, but I think this Smith family outing may have just trumped it. In cinemas nationwide today, After Earth is nothing short of an A+.

Visit the film's dedicated website / Follow After Earth on Facebook / Read the latest film news on Twitter or even go for the G+ updates!

Have a great one!

#ESPspotlight REVIEW: A HAUNTED HOUSE (MOVIE)

Now let's be honest. Discounting White Chicks (2004), you would be hard pressed to find a Wayans production that didn't get a giggle out of the toughest of crowds. We all know that family are biologically gifted with the funny, it's genetic. Like blondes with blue eyes, or our darker nation and flat feet (seriously damaging, and more painful than most are willing to recognise, I might add); the Wayans name and their comedy brand is as natural and authentic as unrelaxed hair. So when you combine the latest offering from the youngest of the '1st gen' comedy clan - in theatres this Friday - the Scary Movie franchise (in the beginning when it was funny), and the excellent choice of Essence Atkins as a leading lady, A Haunted House is already a thoroughbred in its prime, coming out of the gate.

A humour-infused version of Paranormal Activity and just about every other blockbuster of similar ilk; the story starts on #Day1 of the new phase in Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha's (Atkins) relationship. 'Coincidentally', it also happens to be the day he unwraps his brand new video camera. Moving into Malcolm's house, the 'omens' start before the Mrs even stops her box-filled car. From male disappointments to disturbing friends and family; there are jokes and punchlines that work throughout; keeping you laughing even after the storyline crosses over (no pun intended) into an uncomfortable level of supernatural satire.

It's ironic that Wayans actually references Shaggy from Scooby Doo as to my mind, his brand of humour has always been the tanned equivalent of the affable, accidental hero. His pairing with Essence Atkins is equally matched, as her one-of-a-kind comedic timing has been overlooked since her early sitcom days, as the cool elder sister of a once-cute Smart Guy. You 90s kids will know to what I refer. Mostly off the British radar since her Dee Dee Thorne days in that other sibling sitcom, Half & Half; her gradual transition from 'Normal' to 'Crazy' to 'Black Girl Crazy' to 'Demonically Possessed', saved the storyline's descent into White Chicks-level pointlessness on many an occasion. I urge women everywhere to chalk the likeness between those last two stages up to parody too, save Mr Wayans find himself the unlucky inhabitant of a chalk outline before the sequel hits next year...

Supporting performances from a scene-stealing Nick Swardson as Chip, 'The Gay Psychic', Alanna Ubach, 'The Nubian-loving Nympho', and second gen Comedy King Affion Crockett (well if he isn't technically anointed as such, then he should be) as archetypal 'Crim-Cousin Ray-Ray' - give strong weight to a storyline that at times, loses the parodical intent by running far too close to the original. I would love to have added the other original King of Comedy to that balancing scale, but whilst Cedric The Entertainer is undeniably hilarious by living up to his moniker as always; the character of 'Father Doug Williams' as a whole, took the joke a little too far for God-fearing tastes...

You WILL laugh, because the punchlines in the Marlon Wayans / Rick Alvarez script are unquestionably en pointe. If you're actively inclined toward the paranormal, then this is also an entertaining twist on the series for you. But, on a scale of the terrible White Chicks to the awesome Dance Flick and Scary Movie 1; A Haunted House reaches a respectable Scary Movie 2. If you haven't seen any of those, then after you've slapped yourself on my behalf, call this a decent 3.5/5 Stars.

A Haunted House opens in UK cinemas on Friday, 31st May.

#ESPspotlight Review: StreetFest, Shoreditch, 5th May

If there was one thing that Radio 1's Hackney Weekend taught me, it's that I, unequivocally, do not do mud. Also, that you should never engage in any mass travel plans organised by the BBC - but that's a whole other saga. On the plus side, I do love me some Music, Fashion and Live Art; so if someone could just take those, keep them outdoors, but switch out the hideous 'underfoot goo', for some good old, filthy concrete (and indoor plumbing - I mean come on, PortaPotties? Why would anyone be a fan); then I'd just be as happy as a pig in...well, their favourite natural exfoliant. That's why when I learned about 'StreetFest', the literal abbreviation of a festive affair on the streets of East, from the one and only DJ Nikki Beatnik, I made it my life's mission to attend.

Sunday, 5th May found me Shoreditch-bound, with my lovely photog-friend Allie Suwanrumpha (regular readers may recall, she was responsible for the amazing visuals in Part 2 of February's London Fashion Week special). Both newbies to the Radiator PR event; neither of us were prepared for the staggering generic, and cultural mix in the unfamiliar backstreets of East London's creative mecca. Greeted by live street art on entry, the huge murals created in front of our very eyes certainly put paid to any critic who would dare question the true artistry in graffiti. Eventually enticed away by the cheers and anxious gasps of the BMX Demo stage, it was impossible not to raise your heart rate and blood pressure, in the face of wheel trickery performed by people who clearly enjoyed the allure of near-death behaviour.

Having never witnessed a show of this kind in the flesh before, I can tell you that these gents were either very brave, or very mad for even attempting the daredevil stunts that defied gravity and gave new meaning to the term 'raising the bar'...

The nearby Unsigned Stage drew it's own respectable amount of foot traffic. I arrived just in time to catch a mix of live music and spoken word from the talented likes of singer Kayla Layton and conscious poet Chozen. Both delivered raw performances that revived my love of acoustic sets, and my annoyance at those who cannot respect them, or the dying art of common courtesy, by remaining quiet for the short duration of a set or, at the very least, removing yourself from the environment if the task of shutting up while artists perform, proves too taxing.

With thanks to @UrbanRevivalLDN for the
Blue Wooden Bead Bracelet!
To the markets next, and the majority of stalls offered what you might expect from the event; the latest in 'Hoody Chic'; with sweatshirts, tees and skateboards, etc. A few that stood out from the rest though, included wooden accessories label, Urban Revival London, where the cheekily charming Jey Flash talked a very good game about a label I'm sure you'll be seeing and hearing more from shortly - before treating me to a little bit of beaded schwag in the favourite colour of Yours Truly...

From the accessory ambassadors of the event to fashion; apparel label LabSolja Clothing were a fascinating find. The class, intelligence and positivity in their motivation-inspired designs set out to make forward-thinking 'fashionable'; changing the implied connotations of 'hoody' and tee-shirt fashionistas, by changing the message that they promote. VERY interesting approach!

Speaking of messages, the most important of the day had to come from what I mistook for an odd pun in the first. With 'Save The Male!' emblazoned on tees and signage, I had visions of some kind of 'Y-chromosome rebellion' against the championed female empowerment of the post-Spice Girls / Sex & The City eras. My pleasure at being mistaken, was quickly replaced with a sombre sadness, as two lovely gents from CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) told me of the latest disturbing stats collated on Male Depression, and the rising suicide figures in the UK. EricaSharlette Promotions Ltd. is a BIG supporter and advocate of Charity works; so expect to hear more about this and many other deserving causes in the coming months.

Back to my shenanigans, as my stomach followed my nose, out of the warehouse space housing the stalls, to a literal global cuisine wonderland. Slap bang in the middle of 'The Food Zone'; tastes of The Orient stood next to West Indian, Asian and African hot food, with every stand as busy as the last. With my edible call of nature answered, I became quite the comedy sketch to passers by. Trying my hardest to enjoy my Oriental mixed box which, I at first took to be overpriced at £7.50, until I actually tried to finish the thing - Woman vs. Food style - while capturing more of the amazing live street art and trying to get a good look at some seriously talented beatboxers; all without dropping a single thing...(I'm proud to say I succeeded).

Determined to get a good spot for the line up on the Adidas Main Stage, I made my way through other activity set ups, which made brilliant use of the indoor and outdoor spaces. From a Kids Area for trainer designs on interactive screens to what I can only describe as an extremely cool 'Nail Lair', housing a collective of four talented artists whom I would gladly let loose on me - the variety of styles and talent were just another example of the eclectic offerings made available on the day.

DJ Collective Livin Proof were deep into their old skool Hip Hop set by the time we took up position in front of the stage; entertaining everyone from actual Breakers, to the most unlikely of participants...

Supported by BBC 1Xtra's DJ Cameo, Dot Rotten delivered a setlist that left his audience on Overload. Popular tracks 'Keep It On The Low', 'Armageddon' and many more from his impressive back catalogue, the Grime MC was clearly a crowd favourite.

A Supa Dupa Set from the Supa DupaFly duo that is DJ Emily Rawson and the hilarious 'Big Teddy Ted' followed; with what was easily the best set I've ever heard from the Rock The Belles Head Honcho. Not a still foot in the place, Ms. Rawson's old skool Hip Hop, RnB, and Garage mix was directly responsible for making this Blogger dance til her curls dropped. Guilty. As. Charged.

The biggest surprise of the line-up came courtesy of Washington DC-native, Oddisee. Currently touring off the back of his brilliant dĆ©but album 'People Hear What They See'; I'm ashamed to admit that I had never heard of the half-Sudanese, half-American Rapper, prior to the event's press release. I've most definitely been missing out and, if you haven't heard of him yet, so have you. Mention also has to be made of his guitarist / backing vocalist, Olivier Daysoul, who had one of the most beautiful, literal God-given gift tones that this here music lover has heard in awhile. Sounding like a modern-day Marvin Gaye (quite the achievement coming from my audio-snobbish self); my next bloodhound mission is to find more of his works because my friends, that is a Man with a Voice! We unfamiliars were definitely in the minority if the entire rapalong crowd was anything to go by. Rectify your error quickly, with a few choice snippets from his headline set...

DJ Vadim changed the pace to one that kept the Junglists happy, before the Don Diva DJ that IS Ms. Nikki Beatnik took the 'Wheels of Steel' worldwide. Now if you're unfamiliar with the world's most stylish DJ, here are 5 crucial facts that you can always bank on in any of her sets:

1. Her global tastes are reflected in her track selections
2. You'll rack up Musical Air Miles following her 'decksploits'
3. You WILL be SCHOOLED on your music knowledge, no matter how much you think you know about what's really, really hot (yes, you may read that last line in a Missy Elliot voice)
4. You WILL dance until your own feet beg for sweet freedom from your weight and finally...
5. She'll do it all in iconic custom couture and a smile!

With my favourite Writing / Production / Sound System Duo, DJs Nikki and Statis, aka 'Beatnik'

Where the Supa DupaFly set got everyone overheated; by the time Nikki Beatnik closed the show, the contagious energy in the hidden streets of Shoreditch sent the packed crowd at the Adidas stage dancing onto Hysteria Lane. Don't believe me? Have a looksee at the whole day's event, courtesy of the other half of the writing / producing Superteam that is 'Beatnik' - Nikki's brother, Statis:

Definitely my contender for Event of the Year so far, in the 2013 Yearbook and Blog Awards; those other muddy festivals will need to pull something awesome out of the bag to top this one (some customised Wellies for Yours Truly might be a good start)...

Were you one of the revellers? What was your favourite part of the day? Sharing is caring don't forget; so leave your thoughts in the Comments Box below, and this page link on the statuses and timelines of your nearest and dearest, as their honest proof of your undying devotion.

#UPCOMINGEVENT: THE WATCH SALON, JEWELLERY SHOW LONDON, SOMERSET HOUSE, 11TH-12TH JUNE

The Watch Salon London: Preview

For the first time this season, The Jewellery Show London, organised by i2i Events Group, will be showcasing a dedicated area called The Watch Salon London. Housed in the West Wing of Somerset House, this area will showcase a selection spring/summer 2014 collections from 11-12 June 2013.

Renowned as a leading watch brand all over Europe, Festina produce high quality timepieces that combine fashionable designs with premium Japanese Miyoto Movements. The brand has been a key sponsor of Tour de France for over 20 years, and their strong involvement with sports has inspired their innovative styles. Also in the Festina Group is Candino, a Swiss brand with over 65 years in the market and distribution across more than 60 countries. With Classic, Casual, Sports, Elegance, and Planet Solar collections, their latest advertising campaign is called ‘Legend of our time’, featuring Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, this is a brand not to miss.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Seiko watchmaking, having produced Japan's very first wristwatch, The Laurel, in 1913. The brand prides themselves on being at the forefront of advances in watchmaking; they have released numerous world firsts, such as the first quartz wristwatch in 1969, the first automatic generating system in 1988, and more recently, the Seiko Astron GPS solar in 2012. This was the world's first watch to receive and use positioning data from GPS satellites, meaning the exact local time anywhere in the world could be displayed with the touch of one button, using the power of light. The brand aims to continue this success over the forthcoming years, and mark their 100th anniversary with limited edition pieces. Seiko will also be bringing Kenneth Cole, Ted Baker, and Breil to the Watch Salon London.

Founded in 1998, American brand Jorg Gray has transformed from a specialist private label watch company to a globally renowned and distributed brand. Since 2007, when Barack Obama received a Jorg Gray watch as a birthday present from his Special Service detail, the brand has been photographed numerous times, gracing the covers of Time and Rolling Stones magazine in the past year. This triggered a huge expansion in the menswear line, which now includes classic and occasion wear watches, as well as sports watches and a new dive series.

Created by a group of aviation enthusiasts in 1998, Torgeon Swiss watches are built upon high-tech designs, influenced by all elements of aviation. The features include dual or triple timezone displays, E6B Flight Computers, and longlasting nonradioactive uminescence that guarantee readability for day and night. With highly accurate Swiss quartz or automatic movement, each timepiece is of the highest quality and precision, being tested to withstand strong impact, temperature, humidity, dust, and other extreme conditions.

The ultimate 'preppy' accessory, Daniel Wellington team modern, minimalistic watch face designs with colourful Nato straps firstly worn by men in the British navy creating a stylish, adaptable accessory for everyday or occasion wear. The collection includes a men's and women's line, both with an extensive range of patterned, interchangeable straps.

British watch designer and manufacturer, David Mason London, came onto the market in 2012 and are looking to expand their range this forthcoming year. Driven by Swiss movements and a commitment to quality, their latest collection welcomes 3 new ranges, accumulating 12 different watch styles. These include Aviator, Dive, Pilot, Sports and Racing collections, which will be launched in conjunction with major sporting events and backed by Britishbased sporting ambassadors such as; World Renault Series FR3.5 driver, Oliver Webb, and Scottish Rugby International, Tim Visser.

Also part of David Mason London is Arthur Oskar Stampfli (AOS), which launched in 2009 as a tribute to the designer's late father. The brand sought to excel upon the passion, dedication and willpower of Stampfli himself, which is presented through a range of limited edition, exclusively made pieces. Of the 7 current ranges, less than 100 copies of each model are made and distributed solely to an exclusive client list, retaining the brands unique originality. AOS will also debut their new piece, La Naissance d'un GardeTemps, at The Jewellery Show London in June. This is a technically advanced piece with a wholly futuristic aesthetic.

In the last two years, Bering Time has progressed from a starting company in Denmark, to a globally successful brand. Inspired by the timeless, clear beauty of the Arctic, Bering combine optimal material strength with minimalist Danish design for each of their timepieces. Based on ideas of primitive simplicity, their streamlined designs match technical precision and durable, scratch resistant materials, with purely elegant styles.

BQ Watches will also be showcasing in June; as one of the UK's most experienced buyers and sellers of preowned Rolex and other highquality watches, the company offer the most competitive value to both public and trade customers. With over 30 years of experience, BQ Watches have a worldwide client base and will be presenting pieces from Rolex, Cartier, Tag, and other top names.

Over the two days of the show, an impressive lineup of industry experts, including a host of leading retail jewellers, will offer advice on key industry issues and future trend forecasting across two seminar theatres, one dedicated to jewellery and the other to support The Watch Salon London.

Seminar content will include a retailer's guide to pre-owned watches, the newest techniques and practices for cutting edge designs, building an online presence in watch etail, changes and growth in the industry, and timeless trends that will appeal to the customer. The expertise will be shared by the likes of Jon Parker, of the Birmingham School of Jewellery, Robin Kamal, CoFounder of The Watch Hub, Chris Sellors, of CW Sellors and Jura Watches, and David Epstein, the Ecommerce Director of Watch Warehouse. The content will prove invaluable to professionals in all areas of the watch industry.
